We can describe an anal fistula as a small tunnel connecting an infected gland within the anus to the opening on the skin in and around the anus. We expel our faeces through the anus. Some small glands inside the anus are responsible for making mucus. These glands can become infected over time, resulting in an abscess. Approximately 50% of these abscesses can develop into an anal fistula.
