I am an advocate for a dog's mental recovery. I truly want them to succeed. I assess their demeanor, create a strategy to achieve the goal of the owner, and then implement it. Every approach involves Leash Training and getting and keeping the dog's attention.
Leash Training is where the dog owner communicates their wishes to the dog...their likes and dislikes. Just like a telephone line! Through the sounds from one’s voice and from subtle corrections on the leash and then ultimately from the body language of the person walking the dog. I show the owners how to express their disappointments, or their satisfaction and or joy in their dog's better decisions and accomplishments...big or small.
The dog begins to build a link to their owner having done something correctly. Instead of always hearing “No” or “Down” or “Off” etc., they soon discover what it is that you do like or want out of them and so then they are now motivated in the positive way and not out of the negative. They know what you want and work for that response from you.
You can force your will on most any dog, but it will not change their core values. I teach the owners how to win over their dog's allegiance by positive reinforcement and calm assertive techniques and not out of the dog fearing them. That is an “Old School” technique that never worked. Be your dog’s true leader!
Dogs will spot a phony dominant from a mile away. When a dog understands and respects it's owner and their owner’s environment, they are bathed in their own confidence for a job will done, and they become more apt to keep listening and progressing forward with what you have to offer them. Be who your dog looks up to!
