I visited Dr. Bortnick to get tested for TB since I was starting a nursing program and this was a requirement for my clinical. Dr. Bortnick administered the exam with extreme negligence (as I discovered as I advanced in my studies) by sliding the needle under my skin for about an inch while releasing the PPD serum (it should be administered with a single bleb). This caused an extreme reaction and area of redness for approximately 100mm or 4". There was not an area of induration which is required for the test to be positive. He then sent me to Weiss hospital to get a chest x-ray which was negative for TB. I refused to believe that I could have tested positive but he refused to administer the exam again as he stated, "I am the Doctor and know what I am doing!". He then put me on INH for a 6 month period which is a liver toxic drug and referred me to an infectious disease doctor in Evanston. Since my chest x-ray was negative for TB he should have performed a sputum test before putting me on such a toxic drug. My ALT's and AST's (liver enzymes) were in perfect range and after being on INH for just 2 weeks they had sky rocketed to 2-3 times their pre INH levels. They were now in the warning level for being too high. I was fortunate that his carelessness did not cause me to have a hepatic reaction like dark urine or yellowing eyes.
Years later, after graduating college & getting my first nursing job I was required to get another TB test. I went to Walgreens to see a nurse practitioner and found that since she administered the test correctly, I had no reaction at all at 0mm. Once you test positive for TB you will always test positive for TB. I know that Dr. Bortnick either intentionally gave the exam incorrectly to get referral fees from the infectious disease Dr. or possibly to make me sick so I would visit him with more frequency to get more money from me. Perhaps he was just was ignorant about how the exam should be administered which I find difficult to believe.
I called Dr. Bortnick so I could get some closure on the situation and to find out why he would have done this to me. His response in a shouting voice was, "I do not have your chart in front of me so I cannot defend myself. Have a good life!" and then hung up on me.
I would seriously think twice before ever entering this Doctors office!

Things I like most about the practice is: they are very much on time. Dr. Bortnick is very aggressive is resolving ALL medical problems he is presented with. The staff is friendly and helpful. I feel comfortable with the other Drs. in the practice if Dr. Bortnick is not available. This is probably the most knowledgeable staff I have encountered.
