Dr Illingworth received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and went on to get his medical degree from the University of Tennessee. He completed a two-year research fellowship at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedics. During that time, his research focused on three-dimensional modeling and kinematics of the knee after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. He completed his internship and Orthopaedic surgery residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine where he developed his passion for pediatric musculoskeletal trauma and spinal deformity under the mentorship of Dr Keith Gabriel.
