Before joining Summit Health, Dr. Kenneth S. Bannerman, MD, FACC was a founding member of the Essex Heart Group, a seven-man cardiology group located in Montclair which merged with Summit Health in July 2013. Dr. Bannerman is an attending physician at Hackensack University Medical Center (UMC) Mountainside Medical Center where he was Chief of Cardiology for 12 years, Director of the Heart Failure Program, and Director of the Heart Failure Center. He is currently Coordinator for Cardiology Subspecialty Education in the Department of Medicine and a teacher in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Bannerman is also an attending physician at the St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. After his fellowship training, Dr. Bannerman became a staff associate and an instructor of clinical medicine for two years at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He then joined Hackensack UMC Mountainside Medical Center, where in addition to ultimately being Chief of Cardiology, he was Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, a member of the Medical Board for eight years, and a member of the Department of Medicine Executive Committee. He has been Chairman of the Hackensack UMC Mountainside Hospital Core Measure Compliance for Heart Failure and Acute Myocardial Infarction Steering Committee, among others.



Devoted to medical education, Dr. Bannerman earned the Hackensack UMC Mountainside Medical Center Teacher of the Year Award a total of five times. He is a member of the Hackensack UMC Mountainside Hospital Education and Clinical Competence Committee and he is a preceptor for medical residents. He has delivered lectures for internal medicine and family practice residents on EKG interpretation, congestive heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, and understanding cardiac pacemakers. He has delivered community lectures on women and heart disease, cardiac risk reduction, diet, heart attack symptom awareness and treatment, and sudden cardiac arrest. Dr. Bannerman is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He has been a member of the American College of Cardiology Council of the New Jersey Chapter and New Jersey State Medical Society. While at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center he coauthored articles and abstracts about coronary blood flow that were published in Circulation, American Journal of Cardiology, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology.



Active in his community, Dr. Bannerman was a member of the Montclair Senior Care and Activities Center Board of Directors, West Essex Community Health Services Professional Advisory Committee, and Opera Music Theatre International Board of Directors. He was President, Cofounder, and a bassist for the Montclair Chamber Ensemble, a nonprofit professional chamber orchestra that performed for 18 seasons. Before earning his BA in English, Dr. Bannerman studied bass at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He is currently a member of the recently formed Montclair Orchestra and has been a member of the Society of Musical Arts Orchestra.



When he is not working with his patients, Dr. Bannerman enjoys playing classical bass, long-distance bicycling, hiking, skiing, racquetball, and reading.
