Do not go here.
Do not send your loved one here.
Consistent drug use among the 160 residents
Overdoses, deaths, drug dealing.
The staff are sparse and communication among them is terrible.
If you are diagnosed with a psychiatric ailment it may be difficult getting treatment and receiving medications. (Especially on the weekends.)

I understand most institutions at this level of care do not accept medicaid but this is not a place of healing or recovery. It needs to be shut down immediately.

To those seeking treatment I highly recommend a 3.1 level of care that is much more available, newer, an in my experience a better level of care in contrast to the Life Center of Galax.

I have a dear friend there now for whom I fear for her life while a patient at this treatment center.

I just left the Life Center of Galax on the 21st of October and as much as this place sounds like a get-away or even a sensible strategy of recovery, I hate to say it but it isn't at all what they're intending it to be. For one, Galax isn't at all segregated by gender in different wings like they're stating above as "gender specific therapy/group sessions"; there is no adult male or female programs. It is however separated in the sense that women and men have different bedrooms; other than that, the small and big groups are filled with men and women. When I say the rooms are filled, I mean FILLED; as in there was 151 people in the facility when I attended last month; the occupancy states that there are 110 clients, but was overcrowded and understaffed. This place would be cordial if it was as stated above. The medicine line would be an hour at least of a wait, if not more, so there was almost always no "tidy up room" time before community. If you weren't waiting in the med line, you were waiting in the food line and that was always at least a good 30 minutes. The food was the best thing there, because they feed you substantially. The nurse on the 1st floor was high as all get out and a trigger for most patients, not me thankfully. There was also an intern counselor who was high as a kite. I was not alone in thinking these thoughts of them being high, everyone agreed with me and even pointed it out to the head counselors who had no intentions on doing anything about the problem. Stated above, there are "recreational exercise", which I guess is the gym, but it was only open around 7 P.M. and only sometimes was the door unlocked for people to work out; so for me to get what exercise I wanted, I had to depend on running up and down the 3 flights of stairs in the evenings. There was no "stream" or any sort of water in sight of the center, there was no volleyball, basketball or any sort of ball. There was however a horse shoe pit beside what little garden they had and only on the weekends could we play that or either corn hole when they let us bring out the boards. There was absolutely no recreational trips outside of the center like stated above (hiking, bowling). This place in my eyes would get maybe one star and that's because I enjoyed some of the classes that they did teach and I did learn a few things. Other than that this place would absolutely NOT be recommended to anyone. I was so close to transferring to a different facility that I had been to before (Centra Pathways Recovery Lodge, Lynchburg, V.A.) to finish out my treatment but I stayed because the off campus houses were a lot more stress free than trying to move upon 151 odd people in the facility. It wasn't until after I had gotten there that I wished I had gone elsewhere for treatment and also didn't know that the Life Center of Galax had so many bad reviews already. I hope that they clean their act up and make the place worth going to, because if so, it would actually be worth going to.

I completed the courage to change program at lifecenter and I received excellent and personalized care from all the staff. Making the transition from the center back into society was made easier with a comprehensive discharge plan that my counselour, Mr. McKenna and I formulated. I have been clean/sober since I left the program on 8-4-17. Lifecenter treatment basically got me ready to attend 12 step meetings, IOP groups and whatever else it takes to keep me clean/sober on a daily basis.
Thank you Casey and the rest of the staff at lifecenter.

The life center of galaxy save my life! I would encourage anyone that has a addiction to drugs or alcohol, to go to Galax. Wonderful place. And they have housing off campus also. And if you have a chance to stay in the house to so it. The counselor and staff help me so much. And another good thing is that most of them are recovering addicts s to.

Good luck on your recovery

I was not ready to return directly to my home environment and the aftercare planning coordinator helped me find a sober living situation that is perfect for me. I am thankful for the care they give even after treatment is finished and in helping to make sure their patients stay sober.

I entered The Life Center of Galax, completely broken and hopeless, quite near death and with little belief that I could be helped. Since alcohol is physically addictive, it is important for an individual wishing to end their addiction to do so under proper medical supervision in order to prevent dangerous health repercussions. The Life Center provided a treatment program that not only saved my life, but provided me with a foundation of recovery. As of now I am in my fifth year of continuous sobriety and I could not be happier. I attribute the dedication of the Life Center staff and the caring and competent manner in which they took more of me as the largest factor within my ability to recover from a previously hopeless state of being.

The family program at Galax was so important to me in my recovery. It helped my family understand my addiction, our communication problems and what we need to do differently going forward. Without the support, involvement and understanding of my family, I would not be doing so well today. I recommend this program highly.

Last year I lost my job and resulted to some depression. I got involved with drugs and alcohol which brought me to a park place. My family sent me to Galax where I was able to restore myself in many ways. The counselors are very kind, compassionate and caring. I am now living a completely sober lifestyle.
