About

Marguerite Malone, Dr

Sometimes life can just seem to be overwhelming. As you deal with raising a family, caring for aging parents, and managing a career you can sometimes become lost in the whirling maze of tasks. I can help you as you navigate through life’s many changes and demands.

As a psychologist trained in gerontology and as a person who has navigated many of these issues personally, I am well equipped to assist with problems that arise as we get older. My specialties include dealing with chronic illness, loss, end of life issues and the decision to downsize your home, or even consider assisted living or nursing home placement. I work with families as they struggle with the tough decisions, and help you clarify your values and wishes, and compare them to the realities of your situation.

Cognitive therapy techniques which emphasize shifting your reactions from automatic, “knee-jerk” reactions to carefully thought out decisions is one of the many techniques available. Together we use problem-solving techniques and generate workable solutions to your problems. Life review techniques assist you in coming to terms with your life as you have lived it, and help give you a sense of satisfaction over a life well lived.

In addition to my training in psychology, I am an experienced horsewoman, and have integrated equine facilitated psychotherapy techniques into my practice. I have conducted individual and group sessions at Therapeutic Riding of Tuscaloosa as well as an office based and telehealth practice. Many times therapeutic goals can be achieved more quickly with the addition of an EFP session. I also conduct group sessions for pre-teen and teenaged youth and their parents to assist them in identifying communication problems and restoring a harmonious family atmosphere.

No matter where you are on the timeline of life; whether you are the adult in the middle of the “generational sandwich” trying to make decisions not only for yourself but also trying to consider the welfare of children, parents and others who are important to you, or you are the older adult trying to face a life that changes significantly as you age, I can help.

Changes take place gradually in a supportive environment. Often, you make connections between your feelings and the cultural context in which you were raised. Your family of origin, your personal history, and your current situation all blend to create a “picture” of your life. By identifying the strengths of this wonderful picture, and using psychotherapeutic techniques to “reframe” it, you can achieve peace of mind and harmony. Together we will explore new inroads into previously unexplored areas.

Paying close attention to you, listening carefully, and honoring your values, goals and achievements, I will design your sessions to fit your unique personality and style. Working together in a creative, warm and humorous fashion, I will provide the warm, strong and honest feedback you want in order to take control of your life and achieve your goals.

Services Dr. Marguerite Malone is a clinical psychologist with over 30 years of clinical and research experience. She did her undergraduate work at the University of Central Arkansas, and received her Masters and Doctorate degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. She also trained at the University of Alabama Birmingham school of medicine.

Licensed to practice since 1986, Dr. Malone has worked in various settings, including inpatient, outpatient clinic, private practice, equine facilitated therapy programs and long term care facilities. She has experience working with all age groups, from children to elders.

Dr. Malone has been the director of Therapeutic Riding of Tuscaloosa for 12 years. These programs provide animal-assisted psychotherapy for a variety of challenged clients who are enrolled in programs in the Tuscaloosa/Northport area. She has consulted with Greentree Services, a company that provides mental health services to elders in long term care facilities for several years. She has conducted her own successful private practice, and has given classes and lectures on various aspects of psychotherapy.

In addition to years of experience guiding others as they work through their problems, Dr. Malone has first had experience of many of life’s difficult situations, and can empathize and understand the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness clients sometimes feel. According to Dr. Malone, “life is a rich tapestry of experiences, feelings and thoughts that make up a truly unique experience for each of us. Learning to take delight in your personal tapestry is central to a good, full life”.

Developing a rapport with clients is central to her style of psychotherapy. She uses several different techniques, including cognitive therapy, behavioral strategies, self-talk, values exploration and character growth and development techniques to help you discover personal solutions that WORK.

During psychotherapy, you will be encouraged to develop your own personal handbook that you can use again if the need arises. You can use it to help you work out solutions to your problems. This handbook will be unique to YOU, not a book written to try to target as many people as possible.
