The Woman Who Knew Everything...

I'd like to ask the community a question and see what others have to say about this subject. But first, the question requires a brief introduction.

Suppose you knew the answers to all the questions you've pondered and given up on getting answers to. The big questions. Would it change your life at all?

  • How did creation begin?

  • Was there a beginning or has it always been?

  • Is there an afterlife?

  • Do we only live once or do we reincarnate?

  • Why are we here?

  • What's my purpose?

  • Which religion (if any) is right?

  • Are there other intelligent civilizations in the universe?

  • Is there a Creator?

My fiancee asked me a question the other night that got me pondering. What would you do if you got all the answers to those questions?

This led to a series of thoughts:

1. I suppose I would have peace of mind that I know the answers to those questions so I don't have to wonder about them anymore.

2. It probably wouldn't change my behavior. No matter what the answer, I'd still be a good person and I'd still try to enjoy life as much as possible (and help others do the same).

3. However, if there were reincarnation, then I might relax a little about trying to have every possible wonderful life experience in one life! But what would be the benefit of reincarnation if we couldn't remember our past lives anyway? So I might also still try to fit in all into one life.

4. Now... if we found out there were a hell (a place of everlasting damnation where people burn for all eternity because they didn't worship a specific religion, even if they had never heard of it before they died) and if I didn't worship a certain prophet or religion I would go there, then guess what? I'd have to change my life to follow all the rules of that religion (such as accepting a Lord and Savior into my heart or praying in Arabic 5 times a day).

So the more I thought about it, it would change my behavior. So my open ended question to the community is:

How would your life change if you had all the answers to your biggest questions about life and cosmos?

Bonus Question: What do you think those answers are?

True, nwaite, you have to believe something is possible before you can explore it. But, if any link in the chain is broken (any contradictions) the theory must be abandoned or adjusted until it fits what we observe. My issue with religion is that it refuses to adjust even when what it claims is contradictory. It's not faith that something exists, it's a hypothesis that something might exist. The problem comes when people believe things that are contradictory. The theory of gravity doesn't contradict anything we observe. So it's easy to have "faith" in it. That some scriptures found 400 C.E. about man who died 400 years earlier (2000 years ago) are the inerrant Word of God is contradictory. Much less evidence for it. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. We have much more evidence that the stories in the Bible were made up and changed over the centuries to match agendas of political leaders or people who wanted to believe Jesus was the Messiah.

Again it just comes down to having faith. All that matters is what you believe. If you have FAITH the size of a mustard seed you can accomplish many things. The people that have accomplised great things in life or who proven things such as the law of gravity had to have faith that it existed. If they didn't have faith first they would not have been lead along the path to the TRUTH.

If we were content with not knowing the answers we wouldn't even have survived childhood. It's the search for the answers and more accurate ways to look at the world and experience it better that spawned vaccinations, mass production of food for the hungry, medicine to help us live longer, and tools to help us communicate and interact better. I think it's dangerous to think we can never have all the answers. That's a defeatist attitude. We can learn more and more about the universe around us. That's why we are not dead from infectious disease. I hope people appreciate that.

OK. I just had a revelation! Oops, no pun intended. I think I may have figured out why SO many people are on anti-depressants! The big pharm companies are prescribing them to all the "irrational" people. Hey, it could be?? They are just a bunch of scientists too. =) Ok, I'm done joking. This was fun though and I hope people can just be content with not knowing all the answers. I think it's more fun that way. I wouldn't personally wouldn't change a thing if I had them. I would have missed out on way too many life lessons. Bye, L

Also, yes I am saying that someone who hold religious beliefs is believing something that they have no reason to believe other than that it sounds good to them. If the evidence were so strong, there would be no debate, just as there is no debate for the existence of gravity. The very fact that there is debate means that the evidence for it is thin.
