As a newbie to any type of martial arts I had a lot of worries showing up for my first class. It turns out that the worries were for nothing. The club was very welcoming right from the start. The instructors are very patient and really explain in detail each move being taught. The more experienced members help and encourage the newer members. Oh yeah, and it's a great workout. Go ahead, try that first class. You'll be glad you did.
If you are looking for an extremely engaging workout, where your muscles are shredded to the core, and you can fill a bucket with your own glorious sweat, than start Jiu Jitsu training here. Solid workout every time. I had almost zero self defense know-how before joining, and the other students (new or experienced) are all-around helpful/friendly, especially when you're trying to learn some technically-challenging moves.
Starting up with Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Carlsbad was one of the best decisions of my life. I'm 42 and have been watching my kids go to the classes for a few years. I always wanted to try it but the idea of rolling around on the ground as an adult did not seem that fun. However, I tried it anyway. What happened was life changing.
First off, I'm a pretty strong 190 pounds, 6'1, I have some wrestling experience and I wrongly assumed I was reasonably competent at being able to defend myself. After learning a couple techniques, the last 15 min of class we pair up and get to "try" to incorporate them into 3-4 five minute free sparring sessions with other students of all levels. The first guy was about my size and was a new student also. I did pretty well I thought. My "as-seen on TV" skills seemed to work. Then I get paired up with a 135 pound kid who was a blue belt with a couple years of experience. I thought to myself, poor kid, I'm going to over power you. Not a chance... in fact, after getting submitted repeatedly by him (I was tapping out multiple times in 5 min) I quickly realized how big the skill gap was. For every move I had, he had 10 more to contend with me without even breaking a sweat.
As I did a few more classes I realized how much I needed it. The techniques are fun to learn and the free training at the end of each class is priceless. I've done other martial arts before and there's a lot more theory than practice. In Jiu Jitsu we get to practice the techniques at full speed reality and there's just no substitute. I'll leave you with this thought... TRY IT. You'll learn how physically incompetent you are right now :-). They make the learning fun and you'll dig it. See you there!
