My dogs' 1st visit was for what I thought might be arthritis. I was new to the area & his office was closeby. The vet took quite a bit of time checking over my dog & doing range of motion exercises to try & pinpoint where pain came from. He also carefully felt certain problem areas that affect older dogs. He advised me that while it could be arthritis, it could also be more serious.. He was not being negative he simply wanted me to have all the info he could provide based on what he was seeing/feeling. He gave me options on having more testing done & the various ways to handle the problem. After taking into consideration my dogs age, my financial state, etc, we decided on an anti-inflamatory drug & pain medication. After 3 days I called him and we decided to extend this Rx as it seemed to be working. However, by the 8th day my girl was in pain again & I could now see a softball sized lump on her shoulder. I knew the vet was correct in telling me about osteosarcoma,a very fast growing type of bone cancer. Because Christmas was right around the corner we tried to make Leia as comfortable as possible thru the holiday. The day after Christmas - I had to have her put down. Again, the vet explained exactly what to expect (I wanted to stay with Leia thru the euthanasia). He was very gentle with her & answered all of my many questions. He was compassionate without being sappy, and was very professional, yet empathetic. He was my ideal vet!! The vet and his staff made what was a very difficult time much easier to bear. After 10 1/2 years as my faithful companion, I was there when she passed peacefully. My other dog is also up in age & this is the vet I will take her to for all her medical needs!
