My dog was a patient here. I had a question about my bill for my dog's chiropractic care that I asked of the receptionist over the phone when she called to remind me of an upcoming appointment. When I came in for my dog's appointment the next day, I was confronted by Dr. Brown's office manager and told that they would no longer treat my dog and shown the door. This place has no regard for their customers and, worse yet, to their professional code of conduct in which they have an obligation not to neglect an animal with which the veterinarian has an established veterinarian/client/patient relationship. ยง 31.21. Rules of Professional Conduct for Veterinarians.

I was pleased with the good condition of their equipment. Everything seemed safe and current, and I knew my pet was in good hands. I know that they have a lot of clients here so I understand that they many not remember my name every time, but I am always really impressed when I walk in the door and am greeted by name. They always try to make the effort and for this I am grateful. This veterinarian was friendly enough. They didn't go out of their way but I didn't expect much more. I got an appointment quickly. I've never had to wait too long. There are times when I've been there, that I feel like they're favoring certain clients. It's not all the time, but I don't appreciate it when it happens. They are extremely expensive. We brought our shelter rescue to them and they totally missed the fact that he had diabetes. He was diganosed with diabetes 11 months after we got him and they started him on very expensive inuslin shots, 3 months later we had to have him put down and they even charged me $300.00 for that. I am not impressed with this veterenarian.

If money is no object for you, you may be fairly happy with Brown Animal Hospital. If, like me, you have a low income or have to watch your money for whatever reason, though, you may want to think twice. Everyone was, at least in my experience, nice and fairly professional right up until the point where I was presented with my bill, which is where things went bad. A fairly routine visit with a mostly healthy dog turned into an approximately $300 fiasco.

I took my dog in for what should have been a routine visit involving a basic annual exam and vaccinations, plus some heart worm preventative for the next six months. I took him in for basically the same appointment last year and it cost between $125-$150, which is a lot, but something I had managed to save and sacrifice in order to be able to afford.

When my dog was presented, he turned out to have a bacterial infection. It was fairly mild, he was still his usual hyperactive self, making him a relatively health dog. The vet assistant didn't even take his temperature- even after he was diagnosed.

The dog was resistant to having his temperature taken, but you'd think that would be something veterinarians offices would be used to deal with and working around. In any event, my point is that it must have, in their judgement, not been a life threatening condition or they would have at least checked to see if he was running a fever. She also administered routine vaccinations, which generally you don't do with a person or animal with a weakened immune system (Confirming that this was not something really major).

In the end, I was shocked to see a bill approaching $300. It did not meet with my general expectations or my previous experience with the clinic. I am an actual human being with a lot of chronic health problems and my doctor and pharmacy bills don't approach what she charged me. And, of course, payment was due at the time of service.

This was a real shock to me. I'm on a low income, and this is severely diminishing my quality of life. I'll survive, but just barely.

I feel like the fee itself was excessive for what it was, but I think even more importantly, I should have been warned before services were rendered and given alternative options. For example, I could have been told "The treatment and medicines for this bacterial infection will almost double your bill. If you'd like, we can put off doing the routine vaccinations for a month or two." and wasn't. By the time I had any indication of the price, the vaccinations had been administered and my only option would have been to leave medicine for my sick dog on the table to lower the bill a little (I love my dog and didn't feel that was something I could do).

I also feel a little uncomfortable with the fact that medicines were labeled and prepared for me, and sold to me by the veterinarian office itself, automatically, without anyone checking with me first. When I go into a doctor's office, the doctor doesn't try to sell me drugs himself, because it would be a conflict of interest (How would I know he wasn't prescribing things that weren't strictly necessary just so he could profit from selling the drugs?). Maybe these drugs were in fact all necessary- though I particularly question what I later found out was a $30 shampoo when looking at the itemized receipt I didn't receive until after paying the bill -- but I feel as though it would have been more appropriate had I been given the option of having scripts written that I could have taken to a third-party pharmacy.

I think most pet owners worry about their pet's health are are focused on keeping their pet calm in a strange environment during a vet's visit. We don't always think to ask questions and challenge things as we normally would, because we're distracted by the situation. It'd be nice if vets would take that into consideration and make sure they're being clear about cost and other factors.

I called the next day to discuss things, and never received a return phone call.

I will be taking my dog elsewhere next time.
