There are times when I've been there, that I feel like they're favoring certain clients. It's not all the time, but I don't appreciate it when it happens. They briefly listened to me, but quickly downplayed everything I said or stopped paying attention. They had a few different appointment times available but none were perfect for my schedule. I felt abandoned by this office when I was very sick.
I was starting to suffer from some gum pain, so I called to make an appt. for a tooth that was starting experience discomfort, but when I called the office (I was patient there for more than 6 years) to schedule an appt., they told me that they would ONLY schedule me for a tooth cleaning, and THEN the doctor would look at my tooth. The office manager even looked up my records to tell me that I hadn't had a tooth cleaning in a couple of years, and that the pain that I was probably experiencing was from tartar build-up. The office manager also told me that they only see people for "problem" teeth on an emergency basis and that I would not be able to schedule an appt. UNLESS I scheduled a tooth cleaning, and then Dr. Schembari would look at my tooth.
I refused to be "bullied" into scheduling a cleaning, when I needed to be seen for discomfort that I felt was going to turn into an infection if I wasn't seen and treated within the next couple of weeks, so I did not schedule an appt. with Dr. Schembari -- I saw another dentist the next week; it wasn't tartar build-up, it wasn't even my tooth! My new dentist took x-rays and it wasn't my tooth at all, it was my sinuses (they hurt sooo bad that I felt like I had splinters in my gums, and then my ear started to get infected, later, too). I had told the office manager at Dr. Schembari's that I had a problem with this tooth area in the past and that the other dentist in their office had treated me for it; if the office manager had taken the care and consideration to really look at my records, besides to justify forcing me to schedule a tooth cleaning for Dr. Schembari to look at my tooth, she would have noted that I had been there before for this problem, and the other dentist in their office at the time also noted (after x-rays) that the pain I was experiencing (for the same tooth area) did not appear to be my teeth, and that he had recommended that I see a Ear Nose & Throat doctor, because he didn't believe the source of my "tooth" pain at that time to be my tooth (he thought that it might have something to do with my sinuses), AND THEN THE OFFICE MANAGER MIGHT HAVE REALIZED THAT, MAYBE, IT WASN'T TARTAR, SO FORCING ME TO SCHEDULE A CLEANING MIGHT NOT BE IN MY BEST INTEREST! Especially when they know that I am self-pay (I made sure that they knew this when I was attempting to make the appt. with Dr. Schembari and they were trying to force me to schedule a cleaning). Just think, I have no insurance, and I would have spent the extra money that I would have needed to see an ENT on the tooth cleaning at Schembari's, and tartar build-up was not the source of my discomfort. What would Schembari's office have done for me, when they would have realized that they forced me to spend my last dollar on a tooth cleaning, which was not the source of my discomfort, and that I was spending my money on the tooth cleaning instead of using my money to go the the proper doctor to treat my discomfort? Would they even have put 2 + 2 together? That they would have left me to suffer, because they refused to see me unless I paid for some other procedure? And Dr. Schembari COULD have seen me (there was nothing stopping him, except for his office policy and the manager), and he could have taken x-rays, and then told me that it didn't appear to be my tooth, without a tooth cleaning. Dr. Schembari responded to my complaint, but he did not express that there was anything wrong with exercising his office's right to refuse to schedule an ill patient without attempting to force them to schedule some other procedure...Some dentists are like this, not all of them...This office can exercise poor judgement, and, it could negatively impact your health if you let them bully you into services that you don't need.
