I went to Salem Clinic/John Fitzgerald with severe pain due to likely torn rotator cuffs at the end of 2007. It took until 3/2010 for him to request an MRI for one, 11/2010 for the other. He continually lied, saying the ins would never approve an MRI--when SC does inhouse referral approvals.* My ins said they would overturn a denial of the MRIs if SC denied them, as they were both covered and required under my ins agreement, but Fitzgerald flatly refused to request them.

The MRIs and subsequent arthroscopies confirmed that my rotators were severely injured with tears of the tendons, labrum, cuff, etc., and the multitude of injections that Fitzgerald placed into the joint has dissolved my cartilage, leaving large bone-on-bone lesions. When I finally got my medical records, I found he fraudulently documented that I was there for my many initial visits, attempting to get treatment for my shoulders, as, instead, being due to fictitious knee pain (never), neck pain (never) and back pain--which I never bother to report to MDs, as I know how to treat. He also documented fake conditions, such as 'spinal injuries since childhood', and a fake psychiatric condition he alleged was previously diagnosed. If another MD who filled in for him hadn't suggested that I might have rotator injuries, he would likely have never even entered this possibility, even though this was the only source of pain (other than headaches) I ever reported to him for over two years.

I had thought he was a pleasant enough, although rather incompetent, practitioner, until he ordered a potentially lethal dose of a pain killer--50x as strong as the minimal med I had been on for substantial injury--and one with black box warnings from the FDA cautioning about potential death due to respiratory depression. Curiously, he ordered this after he learned I now had a potentially litigable condition. I was prevented from taking it by a pharmacist.

I'm now left with a condition described as 'devastating' and 'life-altering, and live in constant pain--although at least still breathing. I no longer take his fumbling and errors as coming from an overwhelmed but well-meaning PCP. Do not go to either this practitioner or Salem Clinic without obtaining a copy of your medical record. (Also, both he and Byrkit are fond of placing patients on methadone for conditions that they decline to diagnose via imaging, such as degenerative disc disease. I was knowledgeable enough to escape this when he tried it--interestingly, I've grown an inch and a half since my thirties, but, without any imaging, this diagnosis added to my record as well.)

(*they're technically able to say these are 'denied' by the ins, as they make their determinations as 'an agent for the ins'. Their medicare-based plans allow them to keep as profit that portion of their cut of the premium monies they don't spend of patients.)
