We travel 4 1/2 hours every 2 months to see him. That should say it all.

I am the Director of Nursing for a practice here in Myrtle Beach. I understand the frustration with appoint times. Please keep in mind that when you are waiting the Doctor is usually dealing with an emergency or a patient that needs the extra time. One day you will need the extra time.

Dr Gualtieri has saved my husbands life. We would not have such a wonderful life without his help. He is one of the very best in his field in the world. Look at his website. He has presented papers and testified all over the world. His book Brain Injury and Mental Retardation...Pyschopharmacology and Neuropsychiatriy is used as reference by many in the field. Vital signs is a test that used internationally.

If you have the good fortune to get appt with him, make a list of your concerns and bring it with you. If you can't get into see him ask for Katie,
a great PA that works in the practice and is Dr G right hand.

Good Luck

Dr. Gualtieri is a brilliant, though eccentric diagnostician. My parents brought me to NC Neuropsych after I "ran away" from home (stole the family car, drove through several states in a 1500 mile loop all by myself) when I was 16 (I'm now 25). He diagnosed me with depression & OCD, both accurate and helpful diagnoses at the time. The medications he started me out with didn't end up working, but because he was primarily a diagnostic psychiatrist for me this wasn't a problem.

I am and will always be grateful to him for being the impetus for my journey towards better mental health. I also just really liked him; he was kind of goofy and had what seemed like bizarre methods of diagnosis (like slowly kicking a stool out from beneath my feet to see how I'd react) but in retrospect I really appreciated it. There were many times where it seemed like he wasn't actively listening or paying attention but then I would be surprised that he'd remember something I'd said when I thought he wasn't paying attention. So, for diagnosis I'd highly recommend him; for regular/maintenance psychiatry I can't say.

As for NC Neuropsych as an office - I have mixed feelings. It works - that is, eventually I'll see someone but it may not be who I initially intended to see. I started seeing Dr. Ambler a couple of years ago after moving back into the area but my appointments were canceled frequently and eventually they just started having me see her nurse practitioner. Don't get me wrong, the NP is great, but she's not who I initially intended (and payed) to get treatment from. Getting in touch can sometimes be difficult, but eventually you get what you need, although there have been a few close calls with needing med refills.

Some other miscellaneous thoughts: Sometimes there is a long wait, especially when you're seeing one of the more senior practitioners. My only complaint about the waiting room is that it can sometimes be cold; otherwise it's plenty comfortable. The office & intake staff are always friendly and professional. And I really appreciate that they make you take the same survey every time you come in. At first I thought it was a pain in the butt but it's proven invaluable for understanding my progress.

We have found NC Neuro-psychiatry to be very professional, usually prompt in seeing us, and the staff is very courteous and caring. Dr. Gualtieri is the best! He genuinely seems to care, listens to our concerns, is easily accessible and responds in a timely manner. I would definitely recommend Dr. Gualtieri.

He is definitely lacking in attention to detail, which I think is very important. Many times when we visited he would forget my son's diagnosis. He often started discussing another patient's health concern, thinking we were the family of that patient. They rarely adhere to the customer is always right policy here. If I were to compare him to other psychiatrists, I would say he is one of the top in theory and knowledge but one of the worst for true patient care. He is knowledgeable in the latest research, but also mainly promoted the latest drug option. This resulted in a disaster for my son, who years later is still recovering from toxicity issues due to prescribed psychotropic drugs. The best thing I ever did for my son's health is to remove him from the care of this physician.
