I went to Dr. Marchand for 2 reasons. in 2010 I broke my neck in Washington and ended up having 2 cervical disks fused. I also had pain from my lumbar disks. Dr. Marchand said the problems I had were because of age. I am now 66. After hearing this I went to my GP and asked if he could suggest a neurosurgeon here in Santa fe and he said not - what neurosurgeon wanted to move to New Mexico. So after much searching I found a well rated doctor in Denver. I saw him yesterday and he went over my neck and lumbar MRI's. He showed me where the disk area above my fused cervical disk was really bad. It was so narrow and was impinging on my spinal cord. He told me that the cervical area needed to be fixed before the lumbar because he worried that I might fall (as I have been doing lately due to lack of balance) or get rear ended and end up paralyzed - arms and legs. I was totally surprised. If I had not gone to the surgeon in Denver I would never have known the danger I was in. DO NOT GO TO DOCTOR MARCHAND!!!.

Dr. Marchand was my son's neurosurgeon at UNMH. He was presented to us a pediatric neurosurgeon and we later found out that he is a general neurosurgeon, which was shocking to us. He operated on my son's brain tumor and told us that he removed 90% of the mass and was confident that the tumor would not grow back. Later we found out that Dr. Marchand had only removed 50% of the tumor. My son was left with permanent nerve damage that may have been avoidable had a more experienced pediatric neurosurgeon done the operation. When the tumor regrew, Dr. Marchand did not return our many, many phone calls and was completely unavailable to us. We were in absolute crisis and he ignored us. We sought care from a world-class pediatric neurosurgeon in another state, and Dr. Marchand's office nearly prevented us from getting insurance authorization to travel. They refused to return phone calls and were rude and cruel to us when we called. We are very dissatisfied with the care provided by Dr. Marchand. We strongly suggest that parents of children in New Mexico who need brain surgery research their options, seek other opinions, and travel out of state for their care.
