A horrible experience! He should have retired long ago. You will get an air of superiority from him. Although the meetings are hard to handle he does know his meds.

6/8/15-I am not using my real name. It took many visits before I became comfortable with Dr. Mercer. I now have a great doctor/patient relationship. My old psychiatrist retired (I loved him) and referred me to Dr. Mercer. At first, he seemed very detached, seemed uninterested in me, wrote everything I said down and I was uber annoyed that he asked the same questions over and over each visit (suicidal thoughts, etc.) It seemed like he the had no idea of who I was the first year. After the 2nd visit I planned on finding another shrink, but decided to give it a few more visits since my last shrink spoke highly of him. It takes me a long time to trust and open up, and I realized some of the problem might be me. I can't be helped unless I do the work and that includes me being vulnerable and sharing my past. So at that point I was more comfortable with his demeanor and he never seemed to judge me. When I finally opened up about my past and began asking questions and kinda took charge of my own health he became so helpful and still is. I find him friendly and more open than I had thought. He does remember and knows what is going on in my life. One might think he is talking down to them, but he's probably not. It's just him. Maybe the bad reviewer above was looking for a hand holder which he is not. I also get a three month prescription, not 30 days like the reviewer. He is forthright and doesn't sugar coat answers, which I greatly appreciate. After first 2 visits (2 months in a row at first to get to know me) he changed it to every 3 months like I had with my last psychiatrist. Clearly he had my file by then. He is very expensive and I private pay. He is definitely not perfect, but one could do a lot worse. Recommend.

Pros: Easy to get an appointment, they get you in very fast.
CONS: Doesn't seem to care, seems VERY Detached from patients, tells you up front, don't call me after hours or on weekends just go to emergency room. Which technically, I wouldn't have called him unless I felt I was having problems from a medication he prescribed. He seems more interested in just running a prescription writing service. He may be an excellent doctor and very intellectual man, but it is apparent that he doesn't really care about you.I went there three times, I kept hoping the was just having a bad day and it would be better next visit. Each visit I left thinking "Why did I waste my money?" If all you want is a prescription, then Dr. Mercer is the way to go. If however, you want someone to care and really TRY to help you with your problems, then don't go to Dr. Mercer.

Felt like a chiropractor's office as he seems to emphasize return visits and payments over treatment. He WILL NOT call in refills without either an office visit or $45 charge and will not give more than a 30 day prescription even on non-class III drugs; wanted $50 to copy records. Changed to a more pocketbook-friendly MD.
