Dr. Silvertein's front office staff is nice. Dr. Silverstein is very charming but full of hubris. I went to him for one thing pertaining to my lungs. Although I wasn't sleepy and was living a happy and successful life working two jobs, Suddenly after two visits (still about some unknown images picked on my lungs during another doctor's CT scans) one of his nursing assistants decided that I had sleep apnea and suddenly I was off to a dirty sleep clinic, where they decided that I did indeed have sleep apnea. I asked the question, "does this have anything to do with the lung thing that I am coming to you for" and the answer was "No".But for the next year, I tried to sleep with that cotton -pickin' machine, and many masks to the point that I gave up because I had never been so tired before in my entire life. Where once I had been a happy person working two jobs, I was now tired, cranky, and impatient with others. When I told him about the problems I was having, Dr. Silverstein told me I needed to go and have my throat/windpipe laser burned. I told him that in my mind that was not an option. His answer was "Well this is America. Suit yourself. It's a free country but don't blame me if you wake up in the morning with your arms and legs not working because you had a stroke in your sleep.Do you know if we had the kind of healthcare system Obama is proposing and you lived in Holland, they'd force you into the hospital or prison for not complying with sleep apnea laws?" I had an important promotional job skills test the next day. I could not fall asleep with the machine and mask, but after being threatened with certain paralysis, I couldn't sleep without it either. So the next morning on absolutely zero sleep and shaky all over, I drove 50 miles to my skills test and bombed it because of lack of any sleep at all. Several weeks later, sitting in Dr. Silverstein's waiting room for a half hour wait, no less than 6 sleep apnea provider reps came into the office all asking the front desk the same thing, "any new potential's?" That's when I realized that this is big business. Probably in truth if all of us were screened at least 50% of any country's population would have some degree of sleep apnea. Not everyone would be experiencing ill effects, and most would not be falling asleep on the job or causing auto accidents. I am more likely to do this now after treatment than before because I haven't had a decent night of sleep for 3 years since Dr. Silverstein meddled in my life about something I wasn't visiting him for and wasn't having problems with. He is really lucky I don't sue him for the loss of potential income, due to his threatening lecture and for all the misery I've experienced in the last 3 years. Yes, I agree-sleep apnea is miserable for those who experience day to day exhaustion, and can't drive because they dose off, and it should be treated, But if your patient isn't having symptoms, and they and their family are not licomplaining about sleep apnea symptoms, Dr. Silvertein and those in his profession should keep their noses out their patient's sleep habits and leave them alone regarding this and stick to the pulmonary reasons they came to him for.
As a result of all of this, I will never go back to Dr. Silverstein again--even about the reason I went to him in the first place. And PS your patient's come to you because they are sick..They don't care to hear yur political views.

Dr. Silverstein impressed me as not only being an outstanding pulmonologist, but also being genuinely interested in medicine and me as both a patient and as a person. He spent more time than I needed discussing my condition and was extremely thorough. Five stars.
