For 12 of the last 15 years, I complained to Dr Corey-Bloom of episodes that I would zone out, and not until my new doctor (not at UCSD) ordered an EEG revealing these episodes are seizures was something done to address the problem. In addition to MS, seizures are in Dr. Corey-Bloom realm of care. She never took into account that the MS drug (Avonex & Rebif) she prescribed could cause seizures. She should have listened, paid attention, dug deeper, and done something! I am furious! Who else is she not listening too? Who else is walking around untreated. Someone like Corey-Bloom should not be a Doctor in a teaching hospital, or possibly shouldn't be a doctor at all??? Do yourself a favor, find a doctor other than Corey-Bloom.

called for followup appointment May, 2010. Dr's nurse never called back. I am a MS patient. Called 4-20-2011 for a appointment.. I know there is no cure but wanted to see Dr, she's supposed to be the expert doctor on multiple sclerosis in san diego and I need someone who cares. I can't seem to find this doctor. I want to be sure I have everything possible to help my symptoms so I can live my life, after all this is the only life I have and unless there is a miracle from above I will live with this disease till the day I die. A miracle from God will come before I can get an appointment with this specialist. I need some hope from modern medicine too.

Imagine this... You have MS and are having a major exacerbation. You call your neurologist and can only talk to your doctor's secretary/assistant. My symptoms.... hard to breath, couldn't eat, felt like a had a corsett on and that someone pulled it as tight as they could. It as one of the worst exacerbations I have ever had in my 19 yrs of having ms.

I called Dr. Bloom's office and spoke to her assistant. I described my symptoms and asked that she have the Dr. Bloom call me. The assistant resisted- but finally relayed my message. Dr. Bloom did not call. The assistant discussed my message with Dr. Bloom- whereupon she decided that I did not need the typical/ tradition steroid treatment. In the past, my neurologist would have ordered 3- 5 days of IV solumedrol (form of steroid.)

The next day I called again- and again, only speak with her assistant. The assistant was still very resistant to call Dr. Bloom- but when I insisted, the assistant convinced Dr. Bloom to agree to a short term 3 day treatment.

Shortly thereafter, I called again. My symptoms were much worse and I needed to talk to Dr. Bloom. No, alas, the gatekeeper assistant said that she would relay message to the doctor- but Dr. Bloom was very busy in rounds- and, no call. Two days later I called again. The symptoms were much worse again and thought I should speak to the doctor about it. I finally persuaded the assistant to relay my message, and, again, Dr Bloom did not call.

The next day I called yet again and asked why the doctor had not returned my call. Well- that's all it took. She called me and screamed - "What do you want me to do?? You are the 37th patient I have seen/ spoken to today- AND I Don't have a cure! What do you want? I don't have the cure!! - I don't have the cure!! - I don't have the cure!! - I don't have the cure!!" I just bust in to tears.

You see, I have been dealing with ms for over 19 years and am very familiar with neurologists protocol. Any other neurologist would have put me on 3-5 more days of treatment. Dr. Bloom - NOT, she just kept yelling at me. I told her that I took exception to the way she was treating me and she again screamed back at me. My tears continued... She kept yelling until I hung up the phone. To say the least, she has the absolute worst bedside manner I have ever experienced and I transferred back to Scripps Green immediately. Just as an aside--I lost over 20 pounds in those 2 weeks under Dr. Bloom's care and she never saw me- nor wanted to return my calls.

The next day I went back to my former neurologist at Scripps Green and he confirmed what I already knew to be true. Yes, I went on another 5 days of treatment and was on the mend within a few days later.

This is where it gets really interesting. When I first met with Dr. Bloom, she suggested that I get an MRI- which I did. I never heard back from her re: my multiple sclerosis or anything else for that matter.

This is where it gets REALLY interesting.... Two years later, I transferred my MRI records to Scripps Green and received a copy for myself. I am always curious what they write in their records so read the radiologist's MRI report. The radiologist confirmed what I already knew regarding my MS- BUT- also indicated that I had a large nodule in my thyroid that needed to get checked out. Two years later and I had never heard a word regarding the MRI or need to have my thyroid checked. A few months later I underwent surgery to remove the, luckily, benign tumor.

It is absolutely incredulous to me that a doctor could be so irresponsible with a report that needed followup. Her treatment of me aside - this was flagrant malpractice. I always meant to write a formal complaint letter to UCSD- but just thought I would put it behind me.

Today, I received yet another lab report indicating irregular thyroid/ parathyroid blood levels- which reminded me of Dr. Bloom all over again. So- back to my Endocrinologist to see what we will do next.

I shutter at the thought of how she may treat other patients. I fear for the little old lady that just does what the doctor tells her and is not strong enough to question her. What did I learn?? Patients must be their own advocates.

I am forever grateful for the doctors I've had since. Every time I visit them, I remember Dr. Bloom, and just have to give them a huge hug on the way out the door.

Now that I think of it- I think I will send this note to the Board of UCSD Medical Center. It's just not right.
