I'm sorry to say I've never encountered a less insightful or less professional therapist. Dr. Kushner is a self-styled guru- a man who wants his patients to emulate his life, instead of offering meaningful help to lead their own. So if you're already a wealthy baby boomer looking for somebody to pretend to empathize- he's your man.

In my time with Dr. Musher, I learned he loves Audi's, VW Bugs, and for some reason, hates Dr. Dan Gottlieb, the paraplegic host of "Voices int he Family." He also gave me such pithy witticisms as "It's only money!", and "Hey, it can always be worse!"

When pretending to think and/or listen, he rests his chin in his palm with a finger over his lip. When you look to him for insight, he shrugs and raises his eyebrows.

He seems to specialize in patients who enjoy complaining about family and coworkers. Maybe if I were one of those, I'd better understand how this man has stayed in practice for so long.

Im angry at myself for not following the first review. Kushner was rec. to me by someone who never met him but heard positive things.
He was...in no particular order....RUDE, argumentative, snarky, dismissive, condescending. He couldn't even be bothered with a simple..."hello, I am Dr. Kushner." He only could wave us in to his office like cattle with a "COME ON COME ON' attitude.
Save your money. Go ANYWHERE but to this person who needs serious lessons in social skills and professionalism.

If you want someone to commiserate with, or are looking for snappy, sarcastic comments and suggestions, than Dr. Kushner is probably an excellent choice for you. If, however, you're searching for a therapist with genuine empathy, and a sincere desire to help people, you'd do far better looking elsewhere. Dr. Kushner's style is more akin to a talk-show format than any serious discussion. In my professional and personal life I've known quite a few therapists, but none match his utter lack of insight or empathy. Instead of probing problems in any deep way, he likes quick, simple answers and solutions with no long-term benefits. He has made suggestions such as cutting nuclear family members out completely, buying your way out of conflicts,(with money that wasn't an option,) and has a habit of laughing and grinning as a patient recounts something they find upsetting. This last I find particularly troubling in a man who claims to be an expert on relationship issues and depression.

If it were just my opinion, I would feel differently, however after switching to another local therapist, I found that a number of his patients had expressed similar problems with "Dr. K", including a woman who saw him for over a decade without any improvement. When I asked her why she didn't leave, she said he implied his approach was the best one for her, and leaving was only a symptom of her inner conflicts. He said the exact same thing to me, (I've never had any problems with long term commitment before!)

Some therapists want to help people get better. Others seem to only want a continual, (and large) paycheck.
I can't help but feel that Dr. K is one of the latter. Perhaps he lost any passion for his work somewhere along the way. Hopefully, he'll find it again.

In the meantime, I'd strongly advice anyone reading this to avoid Dr. Kushner. Please feel free to contact me for some other local therapists who I can highly recommend, or for more information on Dr. K.
