About

Dennis Birenbaum, MD

Dr. Birenbaum is an MD Anderson trained Hematologist-Oncologist who has been helping patients fight cancer for over 30 years.

More then likely you, a family member, or someone you know are facing the diagnosis of cancer. Cancer is far reaching and does not discriminate. This year in Texas it is projected that 112,230 people will be facing a new cancer diagnosis. A cancer diagnosis is accompanied by a host of emotions and can be a difficult confusing time. During this time patients want an highly trained physician to help them fight this disease while providing an extraordinary level of service and compassion.

The most essential element in dealing with oncology patients is that you must provide a patient centered approach of service. Dr. Birenbaum states “When I left MD Anderson I thought to myself: God forbid if I have cancer I would want my doctor to provide the level of compassion and service that a family member would provide. I would want my doctor to be available to me anytime I have a question or concern.” Dr. Birenbaum implemented a patient centered approach to cancer care at Texas Hematology Oncology Centers with our infusion nurses, clinical nurses, and himself being available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for our patients. All patients receive our clinical staff and Dr. Birenbaum’s personal cell phone numbers and are encouraged to call with questions or concerns. Dr. Birenbaum feels that patients should not talk to a physician’s assistant, medical assistant, another doctor on call, or receive a answering service message during this difficult time.

After leaving MD Anderson this proactive approach in the treatment of cancer led Dr. Birenbaum to do extensive research and discovered that 20-22% of oncology patients are inappropriately placed in hospice services when they have not been given all the protocols available, all the clinical trials, all the phase II and phase III drugs that could put them in remission.
