Sean Barber

Dr. Sean Barber was born and raised in Spring, Texas. His interest in neuroscience began with an undergraduate degree in neurobiology from The University of Texas at Austin. He later received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and subsequently completed neurosurgery residency at Houston Methodist Hospital followed by a fellowship with Dr. Ziya Gokaslan in spinal oncology and spinal tumor surgery. He also studied endoscopic spinal surgery with Dr. Albert Telfeian at Brown University. Dr. Barber specializes in surgery for tumors of the spinal column, including meningiomas, schwannomas, chordomas, sarcomas and metastases. He also has substantial experience with endoscopic spine surgery, robotic spine surgery, image-guided spine surgery and other minimally invasive techniques, as well as complex spinal reconstruction, instrumentation and fusion. Dr. Barber's basic science research focuses on neuroregeneration after nervous system injury. He was awarded a grant in 2016 from the Wings for Life spinal cord research foundation to study the effects of spinal cord stimulation and stem cell transplantation on recovery after spinal cord injury. He has ongoing research affiliations with Dr. Phil Horner's lab studying neuroregeneration and stem cell therapy for neurological injury as well as with Dimitry Sayenko's lab studying spinal cord stimulation to restore function after spinal cord injury.
