“Everyone was trying to convince me that their specialty was the best fit for me,” the Grand Rapids, Mich., native recalls. “But I loved all of my rotations in medical school – pediatrics, obstetrics, women’s health, primary care, hospital-based care, surgery. I didn’t want to give anything up.”
So she didn’t. Dr. Sergeant decided to become a family doctor so she could care for patients of all ages and manage their short- and long-term health issues. She provides well care, obstetrics care that includes vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections, and she sees patients in the hospital. “Family medicine combined all the specialties I enjoyed into one package.”
Not only is the doctor-patient relationship important, but Dr. Sergeant also believes communication is the cornerstone of family medicine. She sets an agenda at the beginning of a patient visit, and summarizes what she and the patient have accomplished at the end of the visit. She wants patients to leave her office knowing they were heard, and understanding the plan for addressing their health concerns.
