Why did you choose to specialize in Gastroenterology?

GI requires the best and most interesting mix of helping patients with procedural skills and complex problem solving. We have by far the most variety of challenges.

Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?

I have a particular interest in colon cancer prevention and genetics with my research experience in molecular genetics. I also have an abiding interest in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s/UC).

Where did you study?

Medical School: Washington University Medical School, Internal Medicine Residency and Chief Residency: University of Alabama-Birmingham, GI Fellowship: University of Texas Southwestern, Post Doctoral Fellowship: Howard Hughes Institute (biochemistry and molecular biology).

What certifications do you hold?

Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Internal Medicine.

What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?

Travel, water skiing, snow skiing, church activities and Boy Scout activities.

Do you have any special honors or recognitions in your medical career that you would like to share?

I have received about 20 outstanding teacher awards from the 2 medical schools where I taught.
