Dr. Burns practices a method known as defensive medicine, where his best interest is the only concern, not the patients. I sought prenatal care at his practice and only saw his nurse practitioner for the first 36 weeks. Once I had to see him, he came across as arrogant, mean, abusive and intimidating, because I did not agree with all of his methods. I decided I did not want to be "checked" any more after the first check at 37 weeks gestation because he was very rough and I felt uncomfortable. He also understood from the time I began to see him, I wanted to have a natural birth, which he was not an advocate of. At my 40 week appointment, he told me that I was "playing games" and he was discharging me from the practice, because I expressed that since my baby was healthy, I did not see the need to be induced. I asked to be able to go to 42 weeks if need be, and he told me no, I could only go to 41 weeks, due to risks which were not prevalent at that time. He then told me a story of a patient he had 10 years earlier who went past 42 weeks, labored at home, and how her baby ended up on a feeding tube. He also said " I am not usually mean to patients, but you seem to think you know more than the doctor."

I could go on and on about the level of unprofessional-ism I experienced from Burns and his staff, excluding his nurse practitioner, who was a compassionate, understanding individual, focused on providing excellent care. Fortunately, I was able to contact a midwifery group in Buffalo, who was willing to let me carry my baby until 42 weeks, as long as there were no health concerns with me or my baby. I went into labor naturally, without unnecessary intervention, which could have put my baby at risk and/or created the need for a c-section.

If you are an informed patient, not willing to be passive and just go along with whatever the doctor says, DO NOT waste your time GOING TO THIS ONE! Seek another MD who is willing to work with you, and not against you, nor make you feel like less of a human being.
