I live locally and wanted to do 2 chemo treatments per month in Grass Valley for my prostate cancer instead of having to fly to LA to see my oncologist there 3 times a month. I need 5 month of treatment. Dr. Newsom told me that the protocol that I am doing was "very dangerous and crazy" even though my oncologist in LA is a world class, published, and reviewed master of prostate cancer treatment. Dr. Newsom told me to do radiation therapy instead! If I wanted radiation, I would have seen the radiologist, plus I can't even do radiation yet until my prostate shrinks from chemo! This new chemo protocol is a lower strength taxotere and carbonplatinum, not anything that is new to a standard chemo formula. So, I now see a world class oncologist in Berkeley, who was familiar with the protocol and treatment plan that my LA oncologist prescribed. At least I can avoid flying to LA twice a month, have another oncologist who is great, and get great care at a large cancer center hospital in Berkeley. Dr. Newsom needs to get up to date on recent advances in treating prostate cancer, and is not willing to learn about new ideas that he is not familiar with. Not recommended! Go to someone else!
