About

Scott McIntosh, DVM

Growing up with Thoroughbred horses and spending my summers on the backstretch of racetracks in Arizona, California, and Caliente, Mexico, I developed an interest in Equine veterinary medicine at the age of twelve.

After working several summers in Newmarket, England and receiving the C.T.B.A. scholarship for outstanding Equine Veterinary student in my junior year at U.C. Davis, I earned my D.V.M. degree in 1976.

Instead of returning to the racetrack, I chose to start my veterinary career as a farm practitioner in Santa Ynez Valley, California. Large Thoroughbred farms were my specialty, and allowed me to develop expertise in areas of reproduction, pediatrics, and surgery. Eventually I became resident Veterinarian for Cardiff Stud Farm in Creston., California, one of California’s premier breeding and training facilities at the time.

In 1992, I moved to Grass Valley and started a mobile equine practice servicing Nevada and Placer counties. After taking a brief break from Veterinary medicine, I returned in 2005 on a part time basis in a local group large animal practice.

Since restarting my solo equine practice this year, I find that I am caring for many of the same patients and friends I had serviced since 1992. I am happy to be back on my own so that I can provide a more personal service to my clients and their horses.

My mission is to provide reliable, progressive and compassionate service at a fair price to all horse owners.

Veterinarians

Gender Male
Services RADIOLOGY

Field radiology is available for routine or emergency services with a new high frequency portable battery powered X-ray generator that can be used without an electrical outlet if necessary. Either high speed rare earth plate images or digital images are available.

ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Ultrasound has become an essential tool for reproduction and lameness diagnostics in equine practice. Ultrasound exams using digital images are easily stored for comparison to previous or subsequent exams, or can be transported via email to other Veterinarians for case consultation.

SURGERY

Field surgery is always an essential part of Equine ambulatory practice. With 34 years of experience in Equine veterinary practice I am well versed in those procedures that are an essential part of ambulatory practice. From routine castrations to dystocias in foaling mares or correction of angular limb deformities in young foals, I have the surgical experience, equipment and the trained licensed staff to assist me, allowing many procedures to be done in our area without referral to other facilities. The lay-up and rehab facility I will be using for my cases has an indoor covered arena and outdoor exercise areas and turn out pastures as well as a state of the art aquacisor and panel walker.

REPRODUCTION

Equine reproduction has been my main focus since I started veterinary practice in 1976. I can provide a complete range of services for the single mare owner to the large breeding operation with multiple stallions and mares. All aspects of reproduction from artificial insemination with chilled or frozen semen to stallion collection and shipping semen can be handled efficiently and professionally.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

Various specialty services often required in equine practice are available upon request. Some of these are, upper respiratory endoscopic examinations, uterine biopsy, limb cast application, pre-purchase examinations, wellness examinations, and a variety of laboratory diagnostic procedures which can be quickly downloaded directly to the patients records from the lab.
