Our vet referred our two year old dog to Dr. Abbott because we had been unable to completely heal a sore our dog got when he was around 6 months old. Our vet had treated it with antibiotics and an anti-fungal, but it never would totally heal and it eventually moved to other parts of our dog's body. Dr. Abbott sent us home with a list of to-dos, put our dog on RX dog food and gave some meds. Our dog continued to get worse and after biopsying and doing multiple skin scrapes, Dr. Abbot still didn't have an answer to the problem. He started our dog on prednisone and it helped the appearance of the sores, but they never got better and continued spreading. After more than 2 months of shoving prednisone into our dog and working ourselves to death trying to do all the other things Dr. Abbott prescribed we do for our dog, we decided it was time for another opinion. We found a clinical trial that was open and we sent pictures to see if he might qualify. I received an email almost immediately stating that he didn't qualify because the dermatologist felt that he likely had a severe fungal infection and needed to be seen immediately. We felt a bit loyal to Dr. Abbott so we called to discuss with him that we were considering making an appointment with another dermatologist (we figured he would be relieved since it seemed he had been through his normal routine of things and none had worked). Dr. Abbott chose not to return our call which really opened our eyes to his true character. As it turns out, our dog does in fact have a very rare and evidently hard to diagnose fungal infection. The prednisone suppressed his immune system so much that the fungal infection has likely spread throughout his body and we are now having an extremely difficult time treating it. I hesitated to write this review simply because the fungal infection is so rare and I felt that Dr. Abbott started off doing all he knew to do. I believe he is a competent dermatologist that likely is really good with treating dogs with common skin disorders; however, I'm so disappointed that he didn't have the courtesy or professionalism to refer us elsewhere when his treatment plan was doing nothing. Instead, he chose to use powerful medicines and scold us for not following his directions (like keeping our dog off the grass and out of the dirt).
