We have 2 dogs and 3 cats....all rescues. After 7 happy years together our dogs got in a huge fight and one dog was pretty badly injured. We took this dog to our regular vet down the street and they told us it would be a minimum $1400 to stitch her up and sedate her. All of the bite marks in my dog are superficial. There is only one bite that MIGHT require a few stitches. My local vet was telling me that because there may have to be drains put in during surgery, that it may possibly cost a lot more than the $1400 they originally quoted. I recently lost my job and do not have $1400 to spend, much less more $$. My vet then asked how much I could afford? What a horrible position to be in. So, after signing a "against medical advice" release form and charged $80 for the visit in which they only looked at my dog, we left feeling very sad and discouraged. After calling around for other options, we were told to go to Max Fund Wellness Centet on Inca St. They were so pleasant on the phone and said that they accept walk ins. I was told up front that they would charge $32 for an actual doctor to evaluate my dog.....not a surprise $80 charge for an office assistant to look at. We were taken to one of the treatment rooms and had 2 people attending to my dog. The doctor came in and told us what he would like to do and the costs involved. He told us that he would charge $20 to shave and clean all wounds (she had one on the side of her head that the $1400 vet missed) and walked us through how we needed to treat her wounds for the next 7 days (hot compresses, hydrogen peroxide, betadine and antibiotics). In total we were charged $69 including office visit! The best part was that we were treated as good people that love their dog and were seeking proper care for her injuries, not looked down upon and made to feel that by not being able to fork over $1400+ like we were bad owners that didn't care about our dog. Stunning cost difference don't you think?? What amazing people they have at Max Fund! We were so grateful for the service and kindness shown to our dog and to us that we made a small donation of $50 to help them continue to help animals. I want to volunteer my time and do something to repay their kindness until I am employed again and can donate money on a regular basis. I have seen many bad reviews of Max Fund's adoption center.....this place is 100% funded by the kindness of others and is one of the only no kill shelters in the state! It's not a pet boutique! Most people there are grossly underpaid or volunteers. Give them a break and see what you can do to help them continue instead of complaining about these saints!! Thank you to everyone at Max Fund for helping me nurse my dog back to health and not ripping me off!!
