This review applies primarily to the nursing staff at this facility. Doctors, therapists and technicians at the facility were mostly helpful and supportive; about half of the nursing staff is neutral to pleasant, but the other half is verbally and psychologically abusive. From this unpleasant portion of the nursing staff, patients are treated as narcotic seekers who are less than human, and/or too unintelligent to understand or do anything about their situation, that everything is the patient's fault and the nursing staff coule get their job done if only there weren't any patients to interfere with their job, even if (my own) medical records show only a major depressive disorder with no inappropriate use of drugs or alcohol. Specialized care, such as for my chronic illnesses like diabetes type 1, and restless legs syndrome, is barely adequate to negligent because nursing staff does not notify doctors of patient's needs. Pharmacy will not provide certain medications (Sinement, Comtan, Stalevo 125) even if prescribed by the doctor, and nurses will not call doctor to see if any substitute is available. October 2009 visit, two of each hydrocodone/acetaminophen tablets and klonopin tablets stolen from my prescribed prescription bottles in storage. Nursing staff provokes most if not all conflict, as patients genrally interact calmly and civilly with each other. Facility is good for detox due to lockdown and highly controlled medication management, but just not very effective for any other type of psychiatric care; I left facility more traumatized than when I went in, each of the past three visits averaging once per year since 2008. Weekends provided no activities all day or night. Weekdays had activities like crayon drawings and the like, and sometimes group therapy or explanation of laws behind psychiatric lockdown and forced stay inside the institution. Individualized therapy is selectively given to severest cases, while other patients are left with nothing to do except wander the halls or stay in their rooms, or color using crayons, and they are released after legal stay requirement is met if determined stable and a support group (doctors, therapy, family, friends) has been established. Documentation of patient rights and responsibilities are not given to patient until he or she is discharged unless requested by patient; furthermore, some of the nursing staff ignore patient rights and further aggrivate patient to go ahead and file grievances (sent to themselves and not to higher authorities so that they can be read and discarded by the said aggrivating nurse) and to file lawsuits as if such would be totally inconsequential, in other words, the mention of lawsuit against facility results in certain nurses laughing in your face as if calling your bluff (wrong move with me). Patients are not respected here, but believe me, the bang-for-a-buck associate's degree nurses often do not deserve respect; though it should be clear that at least one or two nurses at all times are typically and genuinely concerned for patients.
I would never refer any of my family and friends to go here. If I had know how terrible they were I never would have gone. They didn't listen to anything I had to say! Whenever I tried to get a word in, they either interrupted me or cut me off before I could finish. I could tell that they took pride in their office's appearance. It was moderately organized and moderately taken care of. They were cold and not friendly enough. I definitely didn't feel welcome. This provider has no helpful information available online, apart from their address and phone number. They just have a basic listings page.
A year ago (August 2011) I filed an eight page complaint with my health insurance company; when I return to the hospital, it will be the basis for my lawsuit and news media exposure of the reality behind the locked doors of this poorly-run institute (NOTE: This review applies to the Adult Mental Hospital in Bethany, OK, and definitely NOT to the "main" branch of Deaconess hospital in which I was hospitalized in September 2011 and treated with all due respect). Again, I must reiterate that doctors, therapists and techs have consistently been good; only a portion of the nursing staff -- which is all it takes -- is the problem, from my perspective. I have the eight-page complaint letter should any dispute regarding my claims arise. I refuse to be treated like I am a stupid sub-human inconsequential verbal punching bag; we as mental patients are intelligent and some like me will take appropriate civil action.
Advice for patients entering this facility is to keep records of date/time/names of events to be sent to health insurance company as a complaint as well as to patient rights advocate at the main Deaconess hospital.
