My husband had a nasty case of Influenza Jan. 2016. After MUCH trouble, waiting on hold, incompetence & confusion with his new insurance, Phx. Choice Silver, Abrazzo, we FINALLY got him into see one of their HMO providers, Dr. Raj Pillai down in central Phx. Please note, my complaints so far have nothing at all to do with Dr. Pillai - just Phx. Choice HMO. It really sucks, IMHO.
But dear spouse was so sick he needed to see a doc asap and thankfully, they could get him in soon. Our appointment was for 11:30 on a Weds. morning. The office was not in my 'neck of the woods' and we were out of our comfort zone. The office was a bit hard to find, with cramped parking and a rear entrance. When we went in the office there were ladies in their Swahili traditional dress, Hispanics, and a diverse spread of cultural groups waiting. No one but the office staff was speaking English! Boy, we were really out of our comfort zone now. However, dear spouse still desperately needed to see a doctor, so we hung in there and watched Nanny McFee on the T.V. with the cute little Swahili boys. Our wait for our "appointment" went past 12 noon, then 12:30, then 1:00 pm. Neither dear spouse or I had eaten breakfast and I started giving the receptionist the stink eye after 1:00. Finally we were ushered back into a room and dear spouse's vitals were taken and we settled in for another 1/2 hour wait. The back area of the office felt cramped to me, it was adequate, mind you, but I felt that there was a few missing square feet in the halls and rooms. FINALLY, Dr. Pillai got in to see dear Spouse and he was great, very 'American' and a straight shooter regarding my spouse's condition and what he was going to prescribe for it. *Speaking of Prescribing: When I first called to make the appointment, the office staff made clear that the doctor DOES NOT PRESCRIBE PAIN PILLS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PERIOD. And I had to acknowledge that I understood that. It impressed me and raised the Doc's level of credibility with me. This medical practice was not going to get hog-tied into the complications of dealing with addicts and all their drama.
So finally, we got a Z-pac started on dear spouse, as well as a variety of sinus, congestion, etc medications to fight back against this nasty Influenza that is going around. On the way out, we booked a follow up appointment due to the ear infection that was complicating things. I asked the doctor if there seemed to be a lot of this flu, and he rolled his eyes and said they had been crazy busy with influenza patients. He was helpful, personable, and acted like a human, which I have found not to be the norm with doctors as a whole. And believe me, at my age, I've visited more than a few doctors. I gave the three stars solely on the superior impression Dr. Pillai gave me. I took off two stars because of the difficulty of getting to the office, the level of mess and uncleanliness in the back office area, and the wait time of 1 1/2 hours was too long for such a sick person to have to endure. Dear spouse will be keeping his follow up appointment, however, in the hopes of actually killing his ear infection.
