In late December 2010 a relative was transferred to Allendale for sub acute rehab. At age 86 he was frail and needed care. Their care was very good, but I have a concern about their business practices. I was asked for a $4800.00 deposit, which I paid, to be held in case he moved into their assisted living. Indeed, he did stay in their assisted living side for four days in late December before moving.

In early January I asked for a refund of the approximately $3800.00 due him after paying for the four days, but they refused to do so until his bill for rehab was paid. They stated they knew it was going to be covered by both Medicare and his supplemental policy, but refused to release the money. In addition the money owed them by his supplemental insurance policy was less than what was owed him as a refund. They also refused to refund the amount that they would not have been entitled to regardless of the outstanding balance.

When I said I was filing a complaint with the New Jersey ombudsmen for seniors I was told, ‘Hey, do whatever you want.’ In March an officer from the state did visit the accounting office and they said they would send the check, but it did not arrive until the second week of April.

It is my contention that they had no right to hold on to money that was specifically deposited for something other than his rehab, and it seems illegal for them to hold onto an amount that was greater than what was going to be paid them by the insurance policy. While Allenwood insisted they were allowed to hold onto his money, there was nothing in the contract I signed to indicate that was possible.

I suggest families realize that dealing with an nursing home accounting office is something to be done with great care and close attention.
