I had a TKR on left knee in September 2012. Went for my 4 year check-up today and everything is great. I could not walk up stairs before the surgery but now I can run up the stairs!! O yeah I almost forgot the best part. The first Dr I saw about my knee told me I would have to quit my job if he did a knee replacement on me. You see at the time I was a 34 year veteran of my local fire department. Dr Emerson told me that he didn't want me to quit anything so I worked another 4 1/2 years retiring with 38 1/2 years.

I had a right hip replacement performed in March 2015 by Dr. Emerson. The experience was wonderful. Far better than I had ever expected. I had the ASI surgery so the incision was only about 3.5 to 4.0 inches long and sealed up with stitches. My brother, who lives in a different state, had the traditional hip surgery (incision on the side/back of the hip) done in Feb and had a 10-12 inch incision and was sealed with steel sutures. The traditional method also cuts the muscle around the femur whereas the ASI approach does not cut any muscle. He and I talked once a week to see how each other was doing, and he even thought my experience was a lot better than his was. Overall, I could not have been happier. I did not have 'any' pain following my surgery, which I was told afterward was not the norm. The phys therapist who came to my home for 4 weeks after the surgery was also glad to see my recovery status and pushed me on a very aggressive program to rehab. I was riding a recumbent stationary bike within 10 days of the surgery and walking with a cane at the same time. I thought Dr Emerson was awesome and I highly recommend him to family and friends. One other thing I liked about him was that on the initial eval, he asked me how much pain I was in and I told him about 2-3 on a scale of 10. He did not try to push my decision and even mentioned that I may want to see how the hip felt in 12 months to decide on going ahead with any operation. He did not try and pressure me into making a choice unless I was very comfortable with it.
