I first saw Alina Rubinstein in the summer of 1984, when I was 21, and credit her with saving my life. My mother had died four years earlier and I realized that summer that my father was dying too and was overcome with grief for both of them. Dr. Rubenstein was attentive, concerned and very sympathetic; being able to discuss my memories of my mother, my concern for my father and then my grief for him after he died a year later made it possible for me to succeed in my life, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Literature. She even called me in California and conducted a session with me over the phone when I was there to attend my father's funeral. When I was unable to pay the full price of a visit, she arranged a lower fee for me and allowed me to pay when I was able. According to circumstance, she was constructive and analytic and sympathetic and kind. I sought help from Dr. Rubinstein off and on for 16 years, whenever I felt that old sense of despair and paralysis and she brought me back to wellbeing and a sense of my own control over my life every time. I am forever grateful to her generosity and patience and while she would dismiss such a sentiment by saying I saved it myself, I still believe she saved my life or perhaps we saved it together.
