I went in to have my teeth cleaned. I was told I would need to have 18 x-rays before they could clean my teeth. When I questioned this and told them I did not want any x-rays and certainly not 18, I was told that it was "State Law". I asked again, "Are you saying it is state law that I am required to have 18 x-rays in order to have my teeth cleaned?" She replied "yes". I told her that would not work for me and left.

When I got home I called the Virginia Board of Dentistry in Richmond and asked about this supposed x- ray law. I was told that no such law exists. NO patient is required to have x-rays, and that if the dentist felt the need to x-ray and the patient still does not want it- the patient can sign a release form indicating that they refused the x-ray and proceed from there.

It is unethical to falsely claim a "state law" that does not exist, to pressure a patient into getting unnecessary x-rays. Creepy and a waste of my morning.

This is my current dentist and recommend him happily. His focus is on prevention rather treatment of cavities - some dentists seem to go straight for drill and fill which he does not. He has also offered several options / price range based on what I need done and what my insurance will pay for when I did need more extensive work - so I can say that he is aware there is a real world out there.
