The review from July 30th required a response. These individuals came to our office from another dentist, with whom they had a problem.

Unfortunately, most of the members of the family accumulate excessive amounts of tarter (calculus) in a very short amount of time, even the children. One who is genetically predisposed to tarter buildup will to always need to do a better job with their home care.

The process of cleaning the teeth will never be pleasant. Inflammation and tenderness develop in the gum tissue adjacent to the excessive tarter, and not removing the tarter would allow the condition to get worse. Everyone has their own perspective. When mom presented her concerns to me, I investigated. This is what I determined.

Hygienist #1 saw first daughter. Because of the amount of effort required during the cleaning process, first daughter asked "Do I have a lot of crud on my teeth?" Hygienist#1 responds in the affirmative. Daughter reports to mom that hygienist said she had a lot of crud on her teeth. Mom's response- "That hygienist is unprofessional. We won't see her any more."

Hygienist#2 was seeing a second daughter on another day. This daughter had excessive tarter. Hygienist#2, after consultation with hygienist#1, tried to take easy on the daughter and elected to use hand scaling instead of ultrasonic mechanical scaling, only to be accused after the process by the daughter, that Hygienist#2 had maliciously jabbed her gums and caused pain.

Hygienist#3 saw one of the sons on another day. Knowing what had transpired previously, with Hygienist#1 and Hygienist#2, she proceeded with caution. This child also had excessive tarter, but Hygienist#3 thought that all was well. With in 2-3 minutes of being completed, mom, who was in the room decided that the son needed a break.. Because of the excessive tarter and her attempts to be gentle, the appointment had taken longer than expected. Another patient was waiting to be seen. Hygienist#3 attempted to hurry things along. Mom perceived one thing, and Hygienist#3 was attempting to be efficient and move things along.

Mom presented her concerns to me. My perception was that she seemed to take offense at the indication that her children had a lot of tarter buildup. Her statements and accusations, seemed more to be a case of "Shoot the messenger". She didn't like the fact that her children, even thought they may have been trying, weren't doing the best job of cleaning their teeth on a daily basis. She seemed to read a lot into the suggestions that were made to try to improve the situation.

-Hygienist#1 was accused of being unprofessional for making a statement that she didn't make and then not being given the chance to defend herself.
-No child who has excessive tarter, and the inflammation and tenderness that results, enjoys the cleaning process. When mom opened the door regarding the "nastiness" of the hygienists, what do you think that the children are going to say?
-Hygienist#3 may have been a little abrupt regarding allowing an extended break so close to being done, but I am sure that the patients, with scheduled appointments after, appreciated her attempts to stay on time.

The hygienists did what needed to be done in as gentle and efficient manner as possible, given the conditions. I would think that most parents would want the tarter removed and would welcome suggestions regarding how their children can do a better job of taking care of their teeth.

The hygienists here are the nastiest people and most painful ever. After 25 minutes of sitting extremely far back in the chair with his head hanging partially off and his arms uncomfortably crossed (as demanded by the big blonde) my son asked to sit up for 1 minute, literally. She ignored him. I asked her if he could sit up. She ignored me. Finally (as he was in pain ), I said, "Is there a button on the chair that could sit him up for one minute?" She slammed her instruments around...stuff flung through the air . And she let him sit up for 5 seconds and then very nastily sat him down again and finished up fast and hurting him. This is ridiculous behavior. There is nothing child-friendly with them. They are irritated when the parents come in to check on the children. They spend any minute they can get away from their job flirting with some of the bosses. This keeps their job secure, as they are no good at being hygienists. They were very physical with me grabbing my shoulders and moving me around and calling me "Mom" in a condescending voice. There is nothing gentle or friendly or with a family atmosphere with these women. They said in a nasty voice to my son, "Maybe if you come back in 6 months, it won't hurt as bad." They said to my daughter, "Maybe if you do a better job brushing and flossing, it won't hurt as bad, I just don't think you are trying." These are said in nasty, sarcastic tones and my children are young. We will never go here again. The office staff of Betsy, Marla and Linda were always very kind and Dr. Allen Martin was very good and personable. Apparently someone else hired the hygienists because I believe Dr. Allen would have hired people with skill and good character. This is not the case. When talking with one of the dentists (not Allen) he took up for the garish blondes, apparently he hired them. Unless you can go straight from the office staff to Dr. Allen, I suggest you stay far away from here. Dentists and hygienists are a dime a dozen in KS and MO. It will be easy to find ANYONE who will be better. I already have! (I would rate this less than zero stars if it was possible)
