I am a former, post-stroke mycologist who developed a case of scabies. This was relatively simple for me to self-diagnose, having dealt with various mite species in laboratory settings, sometimes on a daily basis. Yet, I was still misdiagnosed by multiple dermatologists in Sarasota, Venice, and St. Pete. No one possessed or wanted to utilize the dermatoscope I had (epiluminescence microscope), including Dr. Monica Bedi.

After two years of this I recently visited Dr. Bedi who utilized me as an example of a neuro parasitosis (in your head) patient, showing me off to her colleagues and arguing for an hour and a half it was not scabies. She also argued that I could not possibly have drug-resistant scabies. There were probably over 8 staff members who witnessed most of this.

I showed her some of the microscopic (and macro) images I have accumulated which she denied being scabies. I offered to present her a mite within 90 seconds of her handing me a microscope slide, utilizing a drop of super-glue and the slide, and initially showing her the mite under my epidermis (i.e. similar to the images I showed her), via a dermascope (with a shared digital screen) prior to removal. Instead she did a test that is less than 50% accurate when done correctly, which she did not do.

She tried to RX me an antipsychotic as well as an antidepressant insisting that antipsychotics "kill scabies". Yet she had just diagnosed it as psychosis-not scabies. I requested a research reference which substantiated this claim, however she denied any were available; claiming that she learned about this at a seminar. I asked for the name of the individual who lectured about this, again without success. I have no history of psychological issues.

The following day I called the office and asked for a n early follow-up appointment, because I really needed her to provide me a second chance to prove to her what I was suffering from but was denied. I then stated that since she felt it was psychosis I would appreciate a referral to a psyche ward, and if possible could she visit me there as my condition progressed, so that the entire institution did not become infested. I was informed I would get a call back but did not.

I called again and asked about the referral but was denied. I requested my medical records. The following day I received a dismissal where Dr. Bedi stated (to my amazement-in writing) that "patient was dismissed after calling our office over 20 times". My telephone records (and her own) can substantiate this was a lie.

Further, after receiving my medical records, her diagnosis was "possible drug-resistant scabies". This really is a literal example of "insult-to-injury". She admitted what I had, yet then refused care.

Worse, SMH refused an MRI appointment (I am suffering from progressive and intermittent semi-paralysis due to a spinal disease. Neurologists and neurosurgeons are all refusing care due to me having scabies. After discovering jurisprudence that allowed me to demand an MRI at the hospital, the MRI supported my claim regarding upper and lower extremity issues, lack of function/severe pain (and other associated symptoms). I was informed by a neurologists that I am urgent need of a neurosurgeon "Do not wait one day...", yet this was months ago. No one will treat me without having the scabies resolved.

Believe I have tried everything you can think of to facilitate care for this, unsuccessfully. The fact that it was misdiagnosed means these professionals did not utilize appropriate decontamination in case I had been infectious (risking other patients and themselves). Everytime I have to go to store, I am potentially infesting others, with a drug-resistant variety. It is statistically improbable that I am not and this comes with it's own guilt.

I have lost the company (new career-working disabled) that had been successful and growing, prior to this condition. This has devastated my life, and the fact that Dr. Bedi had the chance to assist me and was well aware of my disposition, but chose to leave me like a dog, is truly appalling. I am two years past due to cataract surgeon, as well as other conditions, and infections which had care until this condition erupted. I am on two years with no to several hours sleep per night. I don't wish this upon anyone.

This is the most humiliating thing I have ever gone through, the most uncomfortable (google crusted scabies images-and I have been through rare tumors, surgery and radiation), and the fact that I sit in isolation for two years of my life is just not just. I am not a leper in the middle ages, but a human-being...at least I thought.

I apologize in advance to anyone out there who developed scabies and is subsequently misdiagnosed, because chances are you will visit one of the dermatologists I have seen, possibly Dr. Monica Bedi. And if they misdiagnose, and/or refuse continued care, then your life will potentially crumble as mine has. And this is a guilt I live with daily.

NBC did a television news story on me about this (although I consider poor-reporting and disagreed with follow-up report), but this can validate my claim that I am indeed being refused care for a legitimate condition. The fact is that anyone of these doctors' children could sit on the shopping cart I return, and catch this, which amazes me that none consider this. Unfortunately I am a source for an outbreak.

Thank you for nothing Dr. Bedi. Doctors who treat patients like this should lose their license-forever. You do not deserve to be a doctor when you lie in reports/dismissals, and I do not deserve this indignity.

Dr. Bedi is an exceptional physician. I had already been to several dermatologists without satisfactory results when she was recommended to me. She went to great lengths to diagnose my problem and she continued to try different medications/treatments before finding a combination that took care of my skin condition. I would happily use her as my primary physician if she were not a dermatologist.
