Dr DeGroot had successfully repaired my Achilles tendon. However, when I saw him, even the first time, he seemed more interested in teaching interns, residents, etc., than me. He talked to them, not me. a couple days after my cast came off, I was walking and my dogs ran into the back of my legs and flipped me over. I went to a local hopital where they did nothing (like ice) for a wildly swollen ankle and after three hours told me I MIGHT have a broken bone in my foot. I called Dr. DeGroot and he said he would be glad to look at the X-ray. It was Friday night,, so we dropped it off on Monday morning to his office. On the following Monday I called and said, "Is everything ok?" and he said he had not seen the X-ray. I explained that I had sent it down at his request a week ago. He said he would look at it and get back to me. Later that day a woman called from his office and said, :The doctor says you're ok." Proceeding on that assumption my foot continued to be swollen and painful. After about 10 weeks I went in to see him He xrayed the foot and said, "Your bone is broken but not recently." Isaid it had been almost 2 1/2 months. He said, "the tendon doesn't seem ruptured, so there's no need for surgery. Then he asked me, "What do you want me to do?" Well, if I had known I probably would not have needed a doctor. It is now July, and out of desperation and constant pain I went to a podiatrist who had an MRI done. He said the Posterior something tendon was ruptured and if I did nothing I would probably be unable to walk within 2-3 years. Dr. DeGroot never seemed to remember who I was, on phone or in person, and did not seem personally very interested in me, as a patient. His failure to diagnose this problem could have had dire results, but I'm glad I didn't go back to him because I don't have the authority to order an MRI, nor the medical knowledge to know how serious this injury was. However, he should have.
