I had my colonoscopy 6yrs ago and was finally able to block this horror from my memory until yesterday. I was made aware yesterday that I am not the only one who had a terrible experience with Gail Herzig. I had my baseline colonoscopy done at age 50. I chose Gail Herzig because she was a woman, had a good reputation and I thought going to her outpt clinic would make an icky procedure just a little more comfortable. The bottom line is that the Versed and whatever other IV meds given to me did not work. In the procedure room, I was chatting with the nurse when I heard Dr. Herzig enter and comment that I was still talking. Apparently I was not zonked out as I should have been. Without saying hello, without seeing her face, she immediately started inserting her instruments. I started to scream and moan and cry and I heard her say that I couldn't be given any more meds. She completed the scope, left the room, I was brought to recover in a multi shared room. When dressed, I was brought to her office for a 5 minute re-cap. She never apologized for my horror filled experience. All she said in re: to my pain was that I should have future colonoscopies done in the hospital. She nor her office ever followed up with me...no phone call, "how are you doing?" Nothing in writing re: the results were sent to me and they never sent a follow up to my PCP. A few day later, I was lying on my sofa and started to cry uncontrollably. Having never had a nervous breakdown before, I can only imagine that this was what was happening. I now can look back and realize that I experienced a violation and it was not unlike a rape. I encourage all to have procedures done in the hospital so that appropriate meds can be given. I encourage all to have face to face consults to make sure you are choosing the best person to fit your needs.
