Had a simple, somewhat elective "trigger finger" operation performed by Dr.H and although I still have use of my hand the procedure did not correct and even complicated the condition. As it turns out the Dr. admitted to the misdiagnoses of not identifying the correct "pulley" in the tendon and as a result of the surgery I have a dime size knot in the palm of my hand and limited range of the finger in question. Having never experienced surgery before I did not know what to expect. The good doctor, with all good intentions, did not explore all possibilities and assumed it was a typical trigger finger case. No x-rays or MRI and his diagnosis was based on motion tests while holding my hand.

During the operation I was to be awake and able to perform movement in my hand to activate the trigger however I was told later by the doctor that he needed to go in deeper than expected to ensure success so I was kept under throughout the operation. The expression on his face when I activated the trigger on the finger in question in the recovery room was priceless. I was hoping he would say that over time it should dissipate however he immediately took my hand and verified that the operation was not a success. You see, the scraping of the tendon "tube" around the area of the "pulley" should have an immediate impact as the abrasion no longer exists.

On follow up visits Dr. Paul verified through colleagues that it is possible to have a trigger at different locations along the tendon. He dissuaded me from further investigation by indicating that my condition would likely require the "filleting of my hand" to rectify.

Outcome...I still have a trigger finger in both hands which I've lived with from childhood. My left hand condition has been significantly worsened by the surgery performed by Dr. H and it cost me approx. $13K to educate the good doctor of the elusive trigger finger. I now have a diminished range of motion in the finger he operated on and I suspect it's as a result of the stress placed on the tendon from the operation.

Lesson...get multiple opinions before going under the knife. I feel this physician made decisions based on his expreience and knowledge. It may be that the routine of having "seen hundreds of these cases" may lead him to a quick decision, ruling out any other possibilities. The diagnosis was as described above and was made during a 30 minute office visit with Dr. H.
