Very unprofessional assistant handed me brochures for radiation treatment before I even saw Dr. Moini for an initial consultation following lumpectomy, which indicated that she was going to recommend radiation regardless of type of tumor I had. When I asked Dr. Moini what the recurrence rate of my particular type of cancer by age (I am 67), she quoted research/clinical trials that did not look at non-treatment after surgery versus radiation, radiation with hormone therapy, or hormone therapy alone (I'm not a candidate for chemo, as far as I know). The statistics she quoted (10% vs. 2%, hormone therapy/no radiation vs. hormone therapy with radiation), without ever telling me there are long term effects (cancers of the lung, esophagus, heart, blood, even radiation induced breast cancer) which go along with the 2% recurrence rate. Very importantly, Dr. Moini did not provide statistics relating to my type of tumor (beyond stage 1, ER/PR positive, node negative, had lumpectomy, tumor size < 2 cm). My tumor is nuclear grad 1, clean margin, HER2 negative. The study includes tumors with grades 2/3/unspecified, underwent chemotherapy etc. Further, she recommended whole breast radiation, albeit shorter duration (4 instead of 5 or 6 weeks), instead of targeted partial breast radiation. It doesn't seem to me that a very indolent, non-aggressive tumor that might recur more than 5 years down the road (either as DCIS or invasive), required who breast radiation. As far as my age, Dr. Moini like many other radiation oncologists like her, are continuing to recommend radiation to older patients when the opinions of leading breast cancer educational institutions are recommending conservative, wait and see or hormone therapy only treatments to older women. I am appalled at the lack of professionalism, but moreover disregard for my individual situation (including medical history-never discussed), type of tumor and age.
