Saved my life !

Although personable, Dr. Brandeis mislabeled the biopsy samples, with potentially disastrous results. Left and right were reversed. Luckily, after deciding on radical prostatectomy as treatment, we went to UCSF and Dr. Peter Carroll's staff found the error, using TRUS as well as MRI/MRSI. The slides were re-evaluated by UCSF staff and the same results (left v. right) were the same as the lab used by Dr. Brandeis. So the error was clearly in the labeling of the slides at the time of the biopsy.

Had Dr. Brandeis performed the surgery he told us he would remove the nerve bundle on the side with the larger amount of cancer and would attempt to spare the nerve bundle on the other side. Had he performed the surgery he would have removed the nerve bundle from the side with the lesser amount of cancer and perhaps not gotten all of the cancer from the side with the greater amount. Fortunately Dr. Carroll was able to spare both nerve bundles. We are so pleased that we chose to have the surgery at UCSF.
