Prior to joining Arizona Oncology in 2006, Dr. Madani maintained a private practice in Hematology Oncology in Jackson, Michigan. Dr. Madani is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. He was recipient of the 2003 Merit award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He ranked top foreign medical graduate at the 1990 French medicine internship competition. Dr. Madani’s research on leukemia has been published in Blood and Oncology, his research on testicular cancer has been published in the Annals of Oncology and the American Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Dear Friends:
I am visiting an Arizona Oncology Medical Oncologist recently when I overheard a Physician engaged in a telephonic conference call (It was late and I don’t believe they were aware of my presence in the office at the time). I tried not pay attention but could not help myself after hearing the discourse. I could fall at one’s feet at what I was hearing but was drawn in by their conversations and just had to listen in. I have considered taking this matter to the “9 On Your Side” or “The investigators” but I just do not have the wherewithal to do so. This conspiracy is just so egregious that someone, at the very least their patients, needs to know.
My only wish is that I had the presence of mind to use my smart phone to make a voice recording. So I will summarize what I know succinctly. A group of medical Oncology physicians apparently associated with Arizona Oncology are either entering into or have already entered into a conspiracy to extort kickbacks from other physicians for referring their patients to those physicians. I call it a conspiracy because there are multiple persons involved. I don’t know who all of the parties are but I heard many voices and names mentioned and based on the conversation, presume they were mostly physicians or businessmen and women somehow associated with Arizona Oncology’s Chemo Therapy practice. These physicians have the opportunity to refer their patients from their practice to other medical disciplines involved in the treatment process. To that end, they want these other associated physicians to pay them for referring patients to their practices. Somehow they believe that they are deserving of these monies. Surprisingly not one person engaged in that conference call spoke up against this type activity. I used the term extort as I am hearing actual negotiations going on whereas percentages were being discussed and I can only comment that these guys are very greedy. I was appalled at that. Furthermore, they are planning to conceal the scheme from scrutiny within their organization by calling it some “revenue sharing” program. My thoughts are that this type of activity by a medical professional must be illegal, if it is not, then it must be unethical, at the very least it is immoral.
I don’t want to be being “sold” to the highest bidder. I need to be referred to first class physicians for my needs, not some criminal crony in their old boy network. I am hoping that somehow I misunderstood what I was hearing but I passed out of my college and it all seemed quite clear to me after a just few sentences were spoken. If this is not true then whatever it is they are concocting will stand up to public scrutiny.
Subsequently, I did a bit of research on my own. I was surprised to find that AZ Oncology is owned by US Oncology, which is owned by the $42 billion San Francisco medical conglomerate McKesson. The very same company that is responsible for supplying these doctors with hugely expensive chemotherapy drugs. So as if these guys are not already getting paid enough from the insurance companies and Medicare for treatments, the parent company is also making huge money from supplying the drugs. Do they really need monies from other physicians or is this just plain greed at the expense of the patients? Plus the only way these doctors get paid is by getting patients to do chemo. I am concerned that an already unethical practice will proceed to treat individuals who don’t really need it.
Finally, Please do the needful as I hope you will ask your doctor if this is true or not. His answer will ultimately let you know if you can trust him. If he say no and this scheme becomes public, you will know he is a liar. If you gain an admission from him please post here as we all need to know the truth.
