I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and referred to an orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon ordered an EMG and nerve conduction study to rule out other neurological involvement and to determine course of treatment based upon the results. Worker's Comp (WC) was coordinating treatment and scheduled an appointment 1 month after seeing the orthopedic surgeon; I called Dr. Steinberg's office to see if an earlier appointment was available - we found one a week earlier and I scheduled it.

Upon arriving at the doctor's office the lights were off in the office area; a woman turned on the lights a few minutes later and asked if I was the person who signed in on the roster. After confirming this she handed me paperwork to fill out and told me she needed the insurance information; I told her it was WC. She then "reminded" me that she told me she needed the referral, the authorization and other paperwork when we talked on the phone - that conversation never happened. I called the WC adjuster and told her about this and she said she would call the office manager while I filled out other paperwork because she knew she had already sent the required referral paperwork. Once that was straightened out I was called back and the Office Manager took a brief history before I waited for the doctor to come in.

I was starting to get the impression that the doctor was doing a new patient intake and I mentioned that I was there to have the tests done as requested by the orthopedic surgeon. After a brief examination Dr. Steinberg repeatedly told me that sodas could cause two neurological conditions that are currently being successfully treated by another neurologist and suggested changing medications. I again mentioned the testing that was ordered by the orthopedic surgeon and Dr. Steinberg said we would schedule that afterwards.

Before leaving Barbie (the Office Manager) offered an appointment the next day, which I could not take because I'd already scheduled an occupational therapy treatment that conflicted, the same for the appointment she offered the day after. She then told me there would not be another opening for two weeks, which I thought sounded punitive. I again told her that I had appointments scheduled on the first two days offered and her response was, "Should I tell worker's comp that you refused treatment?" The doctor recorded in my record, "After I saw the patient, I was informed by my assistant the patient refused the electrodiagnostic study of the upper limbs." I was there for the studies, that day, as scheduled and authorized by worker's comp...should I report that they refused to perform the service?

As soon as i got in my car I called the scheduler for WC to confirm I was supposed to be having the appointment I had was to have nerve studies done - this was confirmed. She agreed to try to schedule the tests with my regular neurologist and I have an appointment next week.

Further review of my records at Dr. Steinberg's office listed vitals and said my blood pressure was 130/70. That wouldn't be bad, except no on took my blood pressure.

Dr. Steinberg is no longer with Sunrise Medical Group.

Dr. Steinberg's a miracle find. A great doctor as well as listener. My only quibble is with the practice phone response. A lot of "Can you please hold"? followed by an additional hold as they cirect you to the correct scheduler. Otherwise, the overall staff is caring and courteous.
