I've never had such a terrible experience with an eye clinic. On my first visit, they gave me a prescription that was much too strong for one of my eyes. I called them five months later, in a panic, because my eye was crossing whenever I wore my glasses or contacts. They called me back in for another exam. The error was discovered, but they referred me to a specialist just in case that wasn't the cause of the problem. I brought a really old pair of glasses to the exam to demonstrate that the problem only occurred with the new glasses. The specialist recommended I wear my old glasses with a prism for three months, then come see him to make sure the problem had been corrected. If so, I could reorder new glasses without a prism. Unfortunately, my contacts were junk and I had to throw away my year's supply.

My back-up glasses are fifteen years old. They're warped and don't sit evenly on my face. They were missing a nose piece and the lenses popped out all the time. The optical shop did their best to fix them but it wasn't long before the lenses were popping out again, warping the prism.

My mom is getting married this weekend and I am supposed to be singing in her wedding. I called the specialist a while back to see if I could wear contacts just for the day. His assistant said that was fine but he could only give prescriptions for glasses. She recommended I call the clinic where I had my original exam and see if they could help me.

I called them but it is really hard to get in touch with anyone from the contact lens department. I finally connected with Pam and she said she'd be happy to order me a pair of contacts with the prescription that made me go cross-eyed. I explained again that the power was incorrect but the fit should be the same. I had the correct power from the prescription the specialist gave me. She said she'd double check with my doctor but she thought they could give me a trial pair with the new power. I was headed off to work but she offered to contact me there to confirm. She never called me back. I called the clinic every day for the next several days. Often, no one answered and I had to leave a message. When I reached a human being, I was always told that Pam was out of the office. Once, a nice lady called me back to tell me they had a trial pair waiting for me. In the prescription that made me go cross-eyed!

I finally reached Pam by calling their office at 6:55am but she wasn't as friendly the second time around. Perhaps I was supposed to take the hint when she didn't call me back? She said I'd have to come in for another exam, the third at their clinic in seven months. My insurance covers an eye exam once every two years and they don't cover the contact lens fitting fee. After wasting hundreds of dollars because of this problem, I'm not eager to waste more money. In any case, it's too late. We played phone tag for such a long time, my mom's wedding is in just a few days now. I guess I'll head over to the optical department at the specialist's office to see if they can fix my prism and get the lenses to stay in again.
