Horrible experience from start to finish, I burst into tears as soon as I got to my car. First off on the phone they said x-rays are not required, a common question when dealing with hollistic dentists. Then when I arrived they tried to take x-rays and said it would be $120 extra, to which I objected. The x-ray tech was mean and mocking, saying if I didn't do x-rays, not to expect to get a proper exam. The hygienist then proceeded to aggressively try to sell me some small bottle of herbal mouth-rinse for $30, implying that the health of my mouth depended on it. Then enter the dentist. Looking around my mouth it seemed everything he saw elicited an angry peeved reaction. He berated all of my past dental and orthodontic work (all of which was done in childhood when I had no say in it), directing his anger at me as if I was so stupid as to agree with what was done. Apparently my adolescent pre-molar extractions were a terrible idea and messed up my bite to the point where my teeth would eventually wear themselves away and I'd be left with severe periodontal disease. Dismayed, I asked him what could be done to fix it, to which looked at me, rolled his eyes and said dismissively "you could never afford it". I insisted, and he said some complicated procedure about moving my jaw forwards and some other re-engineering of my bite. My reaction was that it would make my face look a bit masculine, a genuine concern since at that time, 5 years ago, I had only recently begun transitioning M to F. Picking up on this, he gave an annoyed look and said "Yea, probably", as if to say 'good, you should look masculine, thats what nature intended for you".

Anyways, years later this still stands out as one of the worst medical experiences ever and I hope they have adjusted their attitudes since. I was especially fragile at that time: young, uninsured and struggling to transition without the support of my family. I was actually very close to suicide, and that experience was almost the last straw. Thankfully it wasn't and I'm here writing about it all these years later. In a nutshell, I'm all for hollistic dentistry, but I would prefer a dentist (and staff) who has more compassion for his patients.
