Barbie Bitches": The New Female Cyber-Bullies" by Bruce W. Cameron, M.S.,LPC-S, LSOTP, CA

The "Barbie Bitches" syndrome (coined by sociologists, not your humble author) had compounded violence among girls, as they tried balancing desires to be attractive with being tough and mean.

Unlike boys, these girls have not learned to "fight fair", so their aggression boils over into physical violence or bullying tactics.

We are seeing more defiance in girls and premeditated violence aligned with a gang-style mentality. Here is a "queen bee" situation where a person asks other girls to try and keep her in a position of power. They will use other girls to deal with any threats - hence the premeditation and ongoing nature of it."

People have always bullied each other and spread ugly rumors. Cyber bullying is a lot worse.

Rumors on the Internet do not disappear the way face-to-face gossip does. When you gossip, people are apt to know your motives and discount what you say. It's also a lot easier to plant false gossip on the Internet than in the newspaper.

Cyber bullying can take vicious forms, like someone taking a picture of you in the locker room and posting it on the Web for all to see.
"One in three online teens have experienced online harassment. Girls are more likely to be victims," finds the best research on cyberbullying, the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

It's based on a nationally representative sample of 935 teenagers from 12 to 17 years old conducted in 2006. According to this study:

• One in six teenagers said someone had forwarded or posted communications that they thought were private.

• More than one in 10 teenagers said that someone had spread a rumor about them online.

• More than one in 10 teenagers said that someone had sent them a threatening e-mail.

The bullies often think they are playing a joke.

I'd like to see if this is a middle-class phenomenon, not seen in lower SES categories because it is computer generated...are there race implications?

Is this a DFW, Soutlake, Grapevine, Colleyville, Keller, Highland Park, Missouri, and a New Zealand thing exclusively? I think not.
