Our Planet isn't the only thing that's overheating!

In today's world, with industrial toxins, genetically engineered foods, reduced ozone and mineral depletion in our soils, cell phones, blackberries, new adjuncts to our ever-expanding technologically dominated world, there are myriad sources of distraction and as a result, increased stress. Our excessive multi-tasking, over-ingestion of caffeine, alcohol, fast foods, and sedentary lifestyles lead to a condition in Chinese medicine called "excess heat," which leads to indigestion, heart disease, headaches and chronic joint conditions such as arthritis and early on-set osteoporosis, and the list sadly goes on and on. So like our beautiful planet, we are suffering from a microcosmic version of global warming. What we need is "cool." We need modalities that literally help us to leave the world of intense distraction and multi-tasking, stress and heat-producing activities behind. We need to engage in mind-body movement that both heats the body and then cools it. We need balance. We need to learn to live defensively and to find modalities that increase our ability to cultivate a new kind of consciousness and enable us to live more holistically.
So how do we do this?
We need to engage in exercise that combines both yang (hot) and yin (cool) in order to balance and harmonize the body's energy systems providing a powerful antidote to today's modern world and it's ills.
Some of my very favorite mind-body exercise techniques like Yoga (specifically Yin yoga) and "Waking Energy" (more about Waking Energy in my next blog!) involve deep breathing and total mind-body intention, leading to an ever- deepening awareness of our inner landscape, helping us to return to a more natural rhythm, helping us to slow down and COOL off.
Yin yoga is a cooling and gathering "un-workout," one that will calm and ground your energies whether at the beginning of your day if you feel stressed and get you off to a steady start, or at the end of a long day to better prepare you for a good night's rest. Yin yoga involves long held, deeply relaxing "stretching" poses that target the deeper connective tissue of the body, the fasciae. The poses stimulate and open the meridians, or energy pathways in your body, restoring youthful joint mobility as you quietly harmonize your body and mind, restoring and recharging your batteries. You literally "cool" your internal heat by moving slowly and calmly and enhance your flexibility like never before and build your energetic reserves--increasing your ability to cope with stress and the demands of your daily life. Because we are able to find a kind of calm and stillness inside, we not only improve the quality of our every day, but we may have a better chance to stop an illness before it takes root in our bodies. Yin yoga and Waking Energy are techniques that nourish and rejuvenate something called "kidney" energy in our bodies--our primary energy source according to Chinese medicine theory. These techniques provide the "cool" to our overabundance of excess heat. Not to say that Power Yoga or running or step class isn't great--they are all beneficial pursuits as long as you balance them with something like Yin or Waking Energy. These magical mind-body modalities I mention reduce stress, increase your energy and calm you down because of a unique chain of physiological events that take place when one engages in the work which yield tremendous health benefits. (more about this when I discuss Waking Energy! :)
These benefits mean a mind and body that comes together in a unified and harmonious way, striking a balance that leads to greater sense of self, peace and harmony, enhanced immunity and stronger energy to ward off pathogens and worldly "energy suckers," technological and other assorted stressors. You know how people tell you to "cool off!" when you're angry or upset? If you practice Yin yoga and Waking Energy, you won't even get angry that often, you'll already be cool as a cucumber!!! :)

Right on! That's awesome! I love hearing things like that. It is so inspiring to hear about people in their later years doing things that are good for them-- for their bodies and souls ---and yoga is really amazing in this way. It offers you a way to really feel better and the results are pretty immediate. Good for her! And what do you do? :) Have you tried yoga or Pilates or qigong?

My mother is in her mid-60s and just took up yoga for the first time in her life. She says it is making a huge difference in how she feels everyday. She looks forward to each and every class. My 7 month old son acts as an extra motivator for her - she wants to be able to keep up with him and stay healthy!

Hi Jane, Thank you so much for your wonderful compliments! Much appreciated. :) And so glad you like the new programs! I'd be happy to tell you about Waking Energy. It's an amazing combination of techniques I developed as a result of all of my experiences in the realm of alternative movement and healing ... Waking Energy is my all new, powerful mind, body spirit workout that combines 5,000 years of ancient longevity and health secrets. It is a magical combination of the quiet focused, energetic heaven and earth practice of Chi-Gong (QiGong), the allure and mystique of something called the 5 Tibetans, elemental movements that mimic the rotation of the earth, stirring and opening the major energy vortexes of the body, activating the chakra system and the nourishing, activating and rejuvenating beauty and simplicity of meridian stretches or Yin Yoga. All of the techniques in Waking Energy are age-defying and rejuvenating--they restore your core energy and boost your immunity-- they make you feel young again! :) When you practice waking and collecting energy exercises, you will actually feel energy awakening within your own body! You literally feel like you are bringing energy toward yourself as you harvest and gather chi, your life force--- from the earth, from the trees, the flower, the plants and everything that grows and breathes upon it. You learn to “harness” the energy of the universe and literally “funnel” it into your own body to activate your body’s natural capabilities and reserves to promote healing and balance. If you follow the workout consistently, you become incredibly fit --you feel confident, more empowered, more energized and calm all at the same time. It's really an amazing workout---one that becomes a way of life. It helps to change your life--everything is positively affected by it, it grows exponentially. I've been doing it for years and I am never bored, but inspired and challenged!

Hi Jennifer, I own your Hot Body Cool Mind DVD and I love it! I'm so excited to be writing to you!!! I try to do some of the combinations every day and when I can, I end with the Yin Yoga. Sometimes I just watch the DVD and listen to what you are saying. You are soooo intelligent and so inspiring. I see that you have another DVD called Waking Energy. Can you tell me a little bit about what that is? Thank you for your incredible new workouts. Sincerely, Jane

Hi Rachel! Sure thing, my pleasure. I can recommend some really great Yin Yoga DVDs ... It just so happens that I recently released a beautiful Yin Yoga DVD under my name available on my site, and my other title under "Hot Body Cool Mind" has a great Vinyasa or flowing and heating yoga ... and as far as teachers of Yin go and other DVDs ... the other Yin yoga greats are someone named Sarah Powers who teaches with more of a buddhist approach to Yin yoga, highlighting the meditative aspects of the work, and finally, someone named Paul Grilley has written a lovely little book on the subject that you might enjoy. YIn yoga really is one of the greatest antidotes to the stressors of our society today. I have more info. on my site about Yin that is quite interesting which can tell you more about what you can expect after a during and after a practice. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info Jennifer, Yin Yoga sounds very interesting. Can you recommend some DVD's for Yoga and Yin Yoga?

Hi there! Thanks for your questions ... As for a beginner trying a yoga class for the first time--- the best place to start often is to try a DVD in the comfort of your own home, and or research the best yoga studios in your area. Since I've been practicing yoga for many years now, if you told me where you are located, I would be happy to recommend some studios. As far as what to expect for your first time, as long as you are working with a good instructor and or a well-recommended DVD, you can expect to feel parts of your body you didn't know were there and other very cool things like that! Yoga is amazing ... you will probably breathe more deeply than you ever have and experience a whole new kind of body-mind connection than you ever have as a result--even your first time. And it's also not uncommon to feel some frustration during your first time, because the asanas or poses can be challenging--especially in the realm of flexibility. That's why it's very important to be under the guidance of someone who understands proper alignment and can provide you with encouragement and remind you to breathe. :) Yin yoga is really one of my very favorite things in life! It's been around for several years, but is only now getting popular ... and I am one of the folks who is doing her part to spread the word. When you do a Yin yoga practice, you feel energized and calm at the same time. The yin poses target your deeper connective tissue, which lies under your muscles and activates something called your meridian system--your body's subtle energy pathways---it's phenomenal-- like needle-LESS acupuncture. The meridians are connected to your organs which have emotional components and when you work on the meridians, you can release held emotions. Sometimes people experience emotional releases while doing yin yoga--releases that can manifest as crying or laughing. You truly feel newborn after a yin yoga session when you do it right!

Yin yoga? That's a new one on me. Is this a new style, or has it been around for a little bit?

I've always wanted to try yoga. What can a beginner expect their first time taking a yoga class? Where is the best place to start?
