Can Regular Dental Care Save Your Life?

INTRODUCTION

Many people, unfortunately, have the perception that dentists are only useful for toothaches, cavities and other “minor” medical problems.  This is very far from the truth.

Not only have dental diseases/problems been linked to cardiovascular complications, but there are a number of potentially lethal and life-disrupting diseases and medical complications that on-going, comprehensive dental care can help prevent or, if already present, treat successfully.

DISEASES & COMPLICATIONS REGULAR DENTAL CARE CAN HELP DIAGNOSE AND/OR TREAT

  • Oral cancer,
  • Cleft palate,
  • Periodontitis,
  • Bruxism,
  • TMJ,
  • Persistent halitosis (sometimes cause by potentially life-threatening infections)
  • Sjogren’s Syndrome,
  • Sleep apnea (depending on the cause, can negatively affect vital organs like the heart, if untreated)
  • Bleeding gums (may be connected to serious diseases)
  • Gingivitis
  • TMD
  • Burning Mouth Syndrome
  • Black Hairy Tongue
  • OralThrush
  • Leukoplakia
  • Trench Mouth

SYMPTOMS TO ALWAYS BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR

There are symptoms that you should always be suspicious of and take seriously, preferably by seeing a dentist or physician as soon as possible.  Some of those symptoms include:

  1. Persistent fever
  2. Pain that won’t go away
  3. Discolored, darkened or swollen areas of the mouth or throat
  4. Any unusual discharges
  5. Any alteration to the taste buds—i.e., peculiar tastes or inability to taste
  6. Persistent bleeding
  7. A grating sound along the jaw, as when masticating
  8. Sores that won’t heal
  9. Dry mouth sensation
  10. Trouble swallowing

MYTH TO ESCHEW: “ALL DENTISTS ARE THE SAME!”

Well-trained, proactive dentists are interested not only in making sure that you have a beautiful set of well-functioning teeth but, also, in making sure that your mouth will not be the source of or impetus for serious medical problems in the future.

In other words, the best dental care is about over-all good health, not just the health of your teeth.

When looking for a dentist, make sure that you find a professional or dental clinic that offers or has a reputation for providing:

  1. Personalized care. That is, they tailor treatment and diagnostic options specifically for your special needs and requirements.
  2. The latest technological advances, treatment options and equipment.
  3. Easy accessibility, both geographically and professionally.
  4. Payment plans and options for just about any budget & an obvious commitment to keep costs down (e.g., providing inexpensive treatment alternatives such as cheaper resin fillings).
  5. Having been in business for a reasonable amount of time.
  6. A good reputation in the industry and in their respective community; a mostly positive image among fellow professionals, present/former clients, professional organizations and the local chamber of commerce.
  7. Support and/or participation in community education programs.
  8. Acceptance of most insurance plans.
  9. Availability (when needed) of emergency dental care.
  10. Obvious concern for your over-all health—not just your teeth.

CONCLUSION

It is essential that you find a dentist or dental clinic that will not only make sure your teeth look and work well but will also make sure that nothing occurs inside your mouth that will either put your life in danger in the future or in any way make it less enjoyable.
