Does a Natural Liver Cleanse Work?

Most people do not think much about their liver until they experience some health issue that is caused when it does not function properly. Some of the more common ailments that affect a large percentage of the population can be partly caused by a poorly functioning liver.

Ailments thought to result from a poorly functioning liver include hepatitis, high cholesterol, fatigue, allergies and an impaired immune system. If you are suffering from one of more of these conditions, you may be a candidate for a natural liver cleanse.

There are several liver detoxification methods to choose from, ranging from a total body cleanse to simply changing your diet to include and exclude certain foods. A relatively simple seven day cleanse that uses only natural foods is safe and fits easily into the schedule of most people. Some benefits of this simple liver cleanse plan can be an increase in energy, improved digestion and even losing some excess weight.

Foods to avoid include dairy products, grains, sweeteners of any kind, dried fruit, coffee and alcohol. Healthy foods that are allowed include any fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh or canned fish, eggs, seeds and nuts, olive oil, decaffeinated teas and one to three liters of fluids per day. Lean red meat or skinless chicken should be limited to two servings per week.

There are seven important steps that should be followed during this detox plan, and they are all relatively simple:

1 - Squeeze the juice from one-half of a lemon into a cup of hot water and drink it before breakfast.

2 - Exercise vigorously for one hour each day.

3 - Eat raw fruits and vegetables instead of cooking them.

4 - Meditate 15 minutes each day to help clear your mind and reduce stress.

5 - Drink water, fresh vegetable juice and herbal teas every day. Aim for a total of three liters of these types of fluids, including at least one liter of pure spring water.

6 - Stimulate your circulation and skin by using a loofah or body brush before you shower. Use firm, circular strokes beginning at the extremities and working inward to the trunk. Finish the shower with several seconds of cold water to bring your blood to the skin's surface.

7 - Concentrate on chewing your food completely to aid in digestion. You will feel satisfied sooner, eat less and probably lose some weight.

While following this plan for seven days has the specific goal of cleansing your liver, most of the steps can be incorporated into your daily life. Making these lifestyle changes will prevent the buildup of toxins in the future and provide benefits that can improve your health and extend your life.

A detox program is not recommended for elderly people, pregnant or nursing women or anyone with existing health problems. Although this natural liver cleanse program follows most guidelines for a healthy lifestyle, it is important to discuss these changes with your doctor.
