At Fluid Chiropractic
We work with the entire body and person as a whole. There’s more to the spine than bones. The spinal column is the communication hub between the brain and the nerves throughout your body.
Your body is an integrated system. Your brain’s job is to work with your spinal cord to talk and listen to your entire body through the peripheral nervous system so that everything works together. It’s an integrated system. Everything depends on everything else.
Wellness:
Our definition of health is fluidity, flexibility, adaptability and the ability of your Nervous System to coordinate all other systems (Musculo-Skeletal, Circulatory, Lymphatic, Spinal Fluid, Respiratory, and Digestive) and resources for healing. All of these systems are interconnected and need to be working properly for you as a whole to work!
That you feel well, inside and out, is our goal. Wellness is not a physical or emotional condition, but how you feel – in your body, in your situation, in your relationships, in your heart, in your head. It is your sense of your self and what you believe about what it means to be healthy.
Our techniques work to help you become fully aware of your body and the ways everything works together for complete, integrated well-being.
Somatic (Body) Awareness:
Athletes, musicians, and yoga practitioners devote themselves to developing a keen awareness of what is going on in their bodies, of how their bodies react to stress and trauma, of what works and doesn’t work, of what strengthens them and what weakens them. They know that the body and mind work together as a team.
The more mentally tuned-in you are to your physical feelings and senses, the greater your capacity to tap into your body’s healing resources. One of the aims of our techniques is to strengthen your ability to pay attention.
Spinal And Neural Integrity:
Whenever there’s a change in your environment, your nerves send signals to your spinal cord, and your spinal cord coordinates the appropriate response with the rest of the body. Three subsystems all need to work in harmony:
Passive subsystem – Vertebrae, ligaments, and spinal discs
Active subsystem – Spinal muscles and tendon
Neural control subsystem – Spinal cord, nerve roots, and peripheral nerves
Our process and techniques used are to strengthen the ability of the nerves and the spinal cord to develop clearer and more rapid communications with each other, so the body can respond and adapt to it changing environment.
The Gut-Brain Connection:
Also known as the 'emotional brain', the limbic system is located in your forebrain and is important in the formation of memories and in controlling emotions, decisions, motivation and learning. It includes the amygdala hippocampus, the most primitive part of the brain, where the body’s “fight or flight” reaction originates.
Whenever you make an “intuitive decision” or have a “gut reaction,” that’s your limbic system at work. When depression, anxiety, annoyance, or emergencies stress upset your stomach, that’s a signal of a breakdown in gut–brain crosstalk.
One of the aims of our practice is to strengthen your awareness of your emotions and their impact on your body. The more tuned-in you are to your emotional responses, the greater your capacity to tap into your body’s healing resources.
Vertebral Subluxation:
Vertebral subluxation is what most people think of when they refer to a spine being misaligned. It’s a structural shift caused by spinal tension. It can be caused by physical trauma, such rear-end car collisions, bad office chairs, or pregnancy. It can be a stiff neck or sore back caused by emotional, mental, or chemical stress.
Unlike conventional chiropractic techniques, we approach vertebral subluxation as a symptom of body-mind disconnection, not as its cause. When the communications between the brain and nervous systems are strengthened, the tension causing the subluxation releases and the spine realigns itself.

NSA
WHAT IS N.S.A.?
A No-Crack Approach to Chiropractic Care that Actually Works:
After fourteen years of education and experience, Fluid Chiropractic has come to rely on Network Spinal Analysis as the chiropractic technique that produces strong, lasting results.
Network Spinal Analysis (NSA), sometimes referred to as “Network Chiropractic” or “networking,” is a chiropractic technique that regards your body as a whole, integrated system, not just bones. It taps into the body’s own potential to heal itself.
NSA employs a gentle touch to the skin along specific areas where the protective covering of the spinal cord connects to the spine. Each touch works to clear up interference throughout your nervous system. With the pathways clearer, your body and brain can communicate more effectively with each other which promotes healing.
Network Spinal Analysis is an evidenced based approach to wellness and body awareness.
Gentle precise touch to the spine cues the brain to create new wellness promoting strategies. Two unique healing waves develop with this work. They are associated with spontaneous release of spinal and life tensions, and the use of existing tension as fuel for spinal re-organization and enhanced wellness.
Practitioners combine their clinical assessments of spinal refinements with patient’s self assessments of wellness and life changes. Greater self- awareness and conscious awakening of the relationships between the body, mind, emotion, and expression of the human spirit are realized through this popular healing work.
NSA is exclusively practiced by Doctors of Chiropractic in relationship to the identification and self regulation of spinal tension and subluxation patterns.
Principles behind NSA:
You’re not an inanimate object that needs to be repaired widget-by-widget. Connective tissue, ligaments, discs, segments of spine are loaded with receptors that have to report back to your brain how much tension each of them is experiencing. The brain then needs to figure out how to respond about what-goes-where with everything coordinating with everything else.
When your body holds on to tension, it causes your body’s communication network to become overwhelmed, sidetracked, or derailed. When the interference is cleared, your brain can pay better attention to the whole system, not just the one that’s yelling the loudest.
How it works:
Your spinal cord is your body’s communication hub. It is where the body passes messages between the body and brain. Physical trauma, mental stress, and environmental toxins can throw your whole system into an overwhelmed state of tension. The tension produces neural traffic jams that disrupt communications and inhibits healing.
Because your spinal cord is your body’s communication hub, it is also your body’s tension hub. So your spinal cord is the place to look for opportunities to dissipate these neural traffic jams.
Research suggests that it doesn’t take much to dissipate those traffic jams – just a slight touch to the precise spots, called spinal gateways, where the nerves underneath the skin and connected to the spinal cord need a reminder to connect with the brain. This touch is called entrainment, because its purpose is to clear the way for your body to train itself to respond to tension in healthier ways.
Spinal gateway:
The spinal gateways are the access points on the spine that the NSA practitioner uses to cue the brain and nervous system to connect with each other.
These access points are not the tense spots where communication has gone haywire. The haywire spots are where the neurotransmitters are too busy being distressed to respond to requests from the outside world with anything other than more distress, which would just result in more tension.
Instead, the spinal gateway is what NSA practitioners call the “peaceful” areas along the spinal cord, the places where nerves will be receptive to contact. The spinal gateway serves as a nexus or hub for interaction among the subsystems that need to work in harmony to establish and maintain spinal and neural stability and integrity. Precise and gentle touch contacts at these spinal gateways assist the brain to connect more effectively with the spine and body.
Research behind Network Spinal Analysis:
In a retrospective study conducted at University of California Irvine’s School of Medicine of almost 3,000 people, Network Spinal Analysis was found to have a direct effect on client self-reported wellness – twice of that expected from healthy lifestyle practices (exercise, risk avoidance, optimal food choices). The study concluded that “effects of Network Spinal Analysis are cumulative and global, affecting all areas of life .… a strong connection exists between Network Care and self-reported positive changes in overall health and well-being.”
Network Spinal Analysis was also found to have a major indirect effect on wellness by promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
The trouble with cracking:
The conventional approach to chiropractic care is to try to realign the spine by forcing vertebrae back into their pre-trauma position so the central nervous system can function properly.
Trying to force bones into a different position won’t help your brain and nervous systems figure out better ways of communicating with each other or responding to stressors.
Why forceful adjustments don’t always work:
Your spine is held in position, not by its bones, but by its muscles, ligaments, discs, and tendons. Forceful adjustments don't always work because they don't work as well with the body as a whole, integrated system.
Your body knows best when and how to let go of tension, allowing the spine to realign itself. Forceful adjustments may not be in the right place at the right time to allow this process to evolve. Through the gentle care at Wilke Chiropractic & Wellness, your body is allowed to do what it knows is best for you.
Forceful adjustments, when administered at the wrong place at the wrong time in a repeated manner can cause microscopic tearing of the ligaments, creating a more unstable spine.
What the cracking sound is – and isn’t:
The sound you hear when a chiropractor performs a thrust on your back or into your neck is not necessarily the sound of re-alignment. It is the sound that the vacuum between the vertebrae makes when they are suddenly separated – similar to the sound a suction cup makes when you pull it off a window.
It’s dramatic. But it doesn’t always mean that the correct adjustment was made.
We only manipulate arm and leg joints (extremities) because we have found it takes people a long time to learn how to self-regulate and self-adjust these areas. The spine however, has such intricate muscular and neurologic control over all movements that it is very easy for patients to learn how to self-regulate and self-adjust the spine and pelvis.

SRI Remove
SRI
WHAT IS SRI?
SRI is when you start learning how to connect with and work on yourself. It involves light touch, breath, energy, movement, focused attention and statements. It really is the home care which empowers you to learn to self-regulate, self-organize and be in charge of your own healing.
Somato Respiratory Integration at Fluid Chiropracgtic is designed to offer you new options in your experience of your body and your personal healing. It educates you to your body’s rhythms and inner wisdom through focused attention, gentle breath, movement and touch. SRI provides you with a means of placing your attention on your body, the vessel of human spirit, and provides a tool for focusing your attention in a way that works for your healing and empowerment.
There are 12 Stages of SRI called the 12 Stages of Healing:
Somato Respiratory Integration exercises are based on these stages as they are designed to help the brain reonnect with the body and its experience. The goal of Somato Respiratory Integration is to help an individual develop lifetime skills, safety, strength, wisdom and love in relationship to the experience of his/her body, its vibration, structure, and energy. Through reconnecting a person’s breath, touch, focused movement and attention, they are able to experience the body more fully and instantly shift their state of consciousness to one that supports trust for the body-mind and their life experience.
SRI is marked by cognitive attention to breath, motion, and self-awareness:
A series of exercises serves to initiate, develop, and refine specific sensory-motor strategies unique to this form of somatic awareness and wellness education. Integration of somatic awareness and rhythmic entrainment with respiration is an essential unique feature of SRI. The active use of these exercises will develop a physical anchor or internal reference to safety and one's inner adaptive resources. Growing evidence suggests that the lack of higher brain awareness of the body, a lack of internal experience of safety, and a non-flexible self-representation underlies many of today's health, wellness, and behavior challenges. Thus SRI is an important self-care tool and educational system, and will be inter-woven with NSA entrainments through all Levels of Care.

SOT Remove
SOT
What is S.O.T.?
History of SOT:
Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) was originally formulated by Major Bertrand DeJarnette (The Major) who was an Enginerr who became a Doctor of Osteopathy and then a Doctor of Chirorpactic in the 1920’s. He developed color-processing and sold it to Kodak to pay for his Chiropractic research on the human body, which we now call SOT. The Major was inspired to go beyond simple spinal adjusting and developed methods of correcting the Cranium, Pelvis, Extremities and Organs. This study brought about a system of adjusting patterns in the body, not just single body parts. The most significant pattern was the relationship between the sacrum and occiput (which became the name of the technique).
An important distinction of SOT is the use of indicators. Each adjustment has a sign or signal that the we use to know when and where to adjust. For example, muscle tension at the knee may indicate the pelvis needs correction, and connective tissue fibers at the base of the skull (called occipital fibers) indicate different vertebra in the back or spine may be in need of an adjustment. This also tells us on the next visit if the correction has been completely or marginally effective. From these indicators, we design a different adjustment set on each visit, listening to the body each time. It takes study to master this method of care, but it isan effective, precise adjustment without relying exclusively on x-rays
One of DeJarnette’s great discoveries was a category system that recognizes that human structures have specific patterns of imbalance. By generalizing patients into three categories DeJarnette developed methods of determining three identifiable, yet interrelated, systems of body reaction. Through the use of specific indicators, location and correction of these body patterns a system of before and after treatment tests can be applied to evaluate need for care and whether the care was successful.
How It Works:
SOT concerns itself primarily with the cranial sacral respiratory mechanism. This is a wavelike oscillation in the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Although quite subtle, this motion is essential for the normal functioning of the brain and spinal cord, and thereby the rest of the nervous system and the rest of the body.
It functions much like breathing air, in that it has a cyclic tightening and loosening phase. Ordinary respiration–breathing air in and out–also affects and can be used to normalize cranial sacral respiratory action. The normal function of the cranial sacral respiratory mechanism is recognized as a primary function of life in the body and must be normal if all functions of the body are to be normal.
Like other chiropractic techniques, SOT also corrects abnormal spinal mechanics and any associated nerve problems. These can include back pain, headaches, dizziness, arm and leg pains.
Through the use of Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Techniques (CMRT) we can help normalize organ function in your body, including high blood pressure, digestive problems, urinary problems, toxicity, female reproductive dysfunction, etc. The list goes on and on. Many head-related symptoms can also be treated by your SOT practitioner, including, but not limited to: TMJ, Tinnitus, Headaches, Visual disturbances, Ear infections, etc.
How Is SOT Different from Other Techniques:
SOT is composed of highly accurate and effective clinical procedures. Dr. Major B. DeJarnette spent most of his life conducting clinical investigation into what works in chiropractic and what makes chiropractic work. Many of the experiments he first tried on himself so that he was aware of the results first hand. He also recruited others to be patients while he tested the procedures. By means of these repeated, peer-reviewed tests, he determined the true nature of the spinal subluxation and how it could most efficiently be corrected.
Is this a proven method?
SOT has been shown to be clinically effective in thousands of offices worldwide. This method of health care is constantly improving and finding new proof of it’s effectiveness. The SOTO-USA website offers many research articles and SOTO-USA is leading the way in evidence based practice of SOT. Visit our Resource Page for research articles.
Many of the other chiropractic techniques use principles that were originally discovered and written by Dr. DeJarnette. The validity of Dr. DeJarnette’s research is proven every day by the practice of these techniques. As specialists in Sacro Occipital Technique, the chiropractors listed on this website are trained in SOT and diligently apply all of their skill, knowledge, and judgment to every adjustment they give. Their effort is to apply SOT as Dr. DeJarnette developed it. This is the proven method and the one that is most often found to be effective.
What is the Goal:
At all times, during an SOT adjustment, the comfort of the patient is considered. But eliminating or killing the pain is not the main goal of a chiropractic SOT adjustment. The true goal of an adjustment, and particularly an SOT adjustment, is to normalize the function of the entire body.
The central nervous system—the brain and spinal cord—is the avenue of approach. The brain and spinal cord are used for this purpose because all studies of the human body show that their function is the primary function of the body. They act to control all other functions of the body as well. So, normalization of this function is the primary goal. As this goal is obtained , the pain will go away. But elimination of pain is simply a side effect of normalizing the cranial sacral respiratory mechanism.
SOT Visceral Work:
Chiropractic Manipulation Reflex Technique (CMRT):
Included in SOT® Methods is Chiropractic Manipulation Reflex Technique (CMRT). CMRT is a system of organ function analysis and treatment as it relates to the spine and the occipital tendon insertions. This method not only allows you to find the major vertebral subluxation but also the degree of involvement, (cerebrospinal-meningeal, vertebral visceral or structural-vertebral). CMRT is a method of adjusting the vertebrae subluxation along with soft tissue reflexes to nourish the organ. The occipital fibers are based on the ability of the proprioceptive system (Golgi Tendons) to respond to muscles influenced by spinal subluxations and visceral and meningeal disturbances.
CMRT allows Dr. Jennifer to take a whole person approach to health. The correction of the spinal subluxation was not enough and Major DeJarnette devised visceral manipulation procedures. Visceral procedures are used to help normalize organ function without the use of drugs or surgery.
SOT Cranial Work:
SOT doctors who continue their training are well versed in cranial manipulative therapies. SOT recognizes the important role of normal cranial function in health and disease. The cranial bones and other cranial structures can cause central nervous system problems that are often overlooked or ignored by most other chiropractic systems.
Early in his research, Dr. De Jarnette realized the importance of the human cranium and made references to such as early as the 1930s. His research focused on other aspects of the human condition for several decades. Viscerosomatic reflexes, trapezius fibers, occipital fibers, and the pelvic Category system took the predominance of his time and attention.
All the while, however, he understood the importance of the cranium, and he knew that it was impossible to treat the entire rest of the body and the cranium as separate entities.
Eighty percent of the nervous system is in the head and can be influenced by cranial structures. However, the other 20 percent enervates every conceivable structure of the body and reflexly influences the brain and cranial function.
Dr. De Jarnette beautifully mapped out these complex interrelationships and proposed some of the first-ever descriptions of the stress patterns in the cranium as associated with the overall skeletal structural imbalances. The Major set the basic understanding of the total body interrelationships that continue on even today.
Researchers such as Dr. Hirotaka Miyano of Japan, who has meticulously mapped out every aspect of the cranial distortion patterns emanating from the pelvic category distortion complexes, are still carrying out the work inspired by De Jarnette. Much of the ongoing and newly-developing cranial technologies emanate from the groundbreaking text of Dr. M.B. De Jarnette in 1968. Having studied the human condition in total for almost 40 years, he produced his first textbook totally dedicated to the human cranium.
However a craniosacral therapist’s focus is generally on relaxing the person rather than actually making a clinical change in a specific type of clinical presentation. Craniosacral therapists are not doctors who are trained in diagnosing patients to discern when a patient may be having a serious condition needing specific care or a referral.
It is for this reason their lack of training for differential diagnosis, being able to assess pathology, and know who and when to refer, has been questioned. In some instances this can create a gray area where patients needing care from a doctor are left in the hands of a layperson without the knowledge of primary healthcare practitioner or knowing how to appropriately triage (work together within a healthcare clinical setting).
Does SOT Require Nutritional Changes:
Often. Any effort to restore health in this day and age on this planet requires improving nutritional intake. This is due to what is called “over-consumptive malnutrition.” Our current food supply is structured in such a way that people eat a lot of empty calories. So, specific nutritional supplements and changes are usually necessary.
Does the adjustment cause pain in my body?
No. SOT works to a great extent by specifically positioning the body to use the weight of gravity and the body to correct the body. This occurs because of an interaction between the specific position the body is in and the motion of the body caused by normal breathing. Many times the patient will feel very relaxed during the adjustment and may even take a nap. There may be some pain when specific points of correction are located. However, patients often report it feels like a “good pain” and is relieving rather than a “bad pain” and serves mostly to let the doctor and patient know that a point needing correction has been found.
Spinal subluxation:
A disorder of the spinal, pelvic or cranial bones which can adversely affect the circulation, fluctuation and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Spinal subluxations can also be associated with spinal joint connective tissue and muscle asymmetry, somatovisceral and viscerosomatic reflex activity, local pain, as well as other related phenomina.
SOT Cat I:
Category I deals with the primary respiratory mechanism between the sacrum and occiput. This relationship is described typically as pelvic torsion (twisting of the pelvis that makes it seem as if one leg is shorter than the other) with limited sacral nutation (tailbone movement). The spinal and cranial meningeal and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) systems function, to a degree, like a closed kinematic chain. Therefore the sacral or tailbone meningeal attachments and reduced movement can have an affect on the tissues above such as the spine with meningeal altered tensions, CSF stagnation, and altered vascular related function.
SOT Cat II:
Category II involves over-motion or instability of the sacroiliac joint causing a dysfunctional relationship between the tailbone and pelvis. The sacroiliac weight-bearing joint sprain makes if difficult for the body to maintain itself against gravity and function at its optimum. It is common with this category to find low back imbalance which can affect the knees, shoulders, neck and TMJ with Category II patients. When Category II patients are not treated and the condition persists it can lead to a Category III type condition.
SOT Cat III:
Category III is commonly associated with severe low back pain relating to sciatica or disc herniations. Patients often have difficulty standing up straight and can be leaning to one side and forward. They will have pain when they cough or sneeze, attempt to sit or arise from a seated position, or even just putting on their shoes. It is also possible to have numbness or weakness in the legs.
SOT offers very specific methods that are effective and specific for each individual patient’s needs. Each patient is treated individually and in some instances other SOT methods are needed to improve function of organs (CMRT – chiropractic manipulative reflex technique), cranial bone and TMJ (jaw), and foot, ankle, knee, hip as well as hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder function.

KinesioTaping Remove
KinesioTaping
The Kinesio Taping Method is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while allowing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. It is used to successfully treat a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions. Both Kinesio® Tex Tape and the training protocol have shown results that would have been unheard of using older methods and materials.
In the mid-1970s, Dr. Kenzo Kase was already a well-known practitioner licensed in chiropractic and acupuncture in the US and Japan. He developed the tape, which has a texture and elasticity very close to living human skin, in response to limitations he encountered working with rigid sports taping methods on his own patients.
He had become familiar with a cryotherapy treatment for arthritis that utilized tape to adjust joint distortion. In Western medicine the presumption had been that once a joint is in a certain shape that cannot be changed. He was intrigued by the possibilities that this treatment could remediate the distortion.
To develop such a modality, he ordered supplies of the different athletic tapes that were available at that time. None of them gave him the results he was looking for. By trial and error, he realized that the source of the complaint was actually in the muscle, not in the joint or in the bone. To stabilize the joint he saw that it was more effective to tape around the muscle to achieve joint correction. The tapes that he was able to obtain were rigid, designed to immobilize the joint.
In cases of injury or overuse, the muscle loses its elasticity. Dr. Kase needed to develop a tape that would have the same elasticity as healthy human muscle. He knew from his practice that the tape would also need to stay on the skin where it was applied. He spent two years doing a lot of research relating to elasticity, adhesives and breathability.
Finally, he came up with a tape that possessed the proper degree of elasticity, and that lifts the skin microscopically. Kinesio® Tex Tape was invented. Dr. Kase coined the unique name "Kinesio" in reference to the body movement of kinesiology and kinesthesis.
Kinesio® Tex Tape is used to:
Re-educate the neuromuscular system.
Reduce pain.
Optimize performance.
Prevent injury.
Promote improved circulation and healing.
Dr. Kase continues to work closely with Kinesio® distributors throughout the world as well as with Kinesio Taping® Association International (KTAI) and its members. Kinesio® USA and KTAI continue to maintain Dr. Kase’s high standards of care and to track new and increasingly effective uses for the taping method.

Calibration involves putting each orthotic in a high pressure chamber for testing. An air bladder is filled until the pressure against the orthotic shell is enough to make it flex downward a certain amount (just like your foot will do when you put your weight on it).
Whether you are a competitive or recreational athlete, your foot is unique and requires specific callibration for the right mix of flex and rigidity. This is the real custom factor absent in standard 'custom' orthotics. We love it when we can give athltetes a competitive edge based on powerful feet.
Sole Supports is the only company doing research at major universities to back up claims of increased performance and have a number of professional athletes using the orthotics to gain a competitive edge.
